GENEVA: Polio that has crippled at least 13 children in Syria has been confirmed as being caused by a strain of the virus that originated in Pakistan and is spreading across the Middle East, the World Health Organisation said.

Genetic sequencing shows the strain found in Syrian children in Deir al-Zor, where an outbreak was detected last month, is linked to the strain of Pakistani origin found in sewage in Egypt, Israel and Palestinian territories in the past year.

"Genetic sequencing indicates that the isolated viruses are most closely linked to virus detected in environmental samples in Egypt in December 2012 (which in turn had been linked to wild poliovirus circulating in Pakistan)," the United Nations agency said in a statement on Monday.

Closely-related strains of the wild poliovirus of Pakistani origin have also been detected in sewage samples in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza Strip since February 2013, it said.

Polio virus has been confirmed in 13 of 22 children who became paralysed in the northern Syrian province of Deir al-Zor. Investigations continue into the other 9 cases. It is Syria's first polio outbreak since 1999.

No children in Egypt, Israel or the Palestinian territories have been hit by polio thanks to high immunisation rates and a strong response to the alert, WHO spokeswoman Sona Bari said.

Polio virus is endemic in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria despite a 25-year-old campaign to eradicate the disease, which can paralyse a child in hours.

IMMUNISATION RATES

Militants from countries including Pakistan are among groups battling to oust President Bashar al-Assad, leading to speculation that they brought the virus into the country.

The WHO says it is unlikely that adults, who generally have higher immunity, carried the virus into Syria and that its mode of transmission will probably never be known.

Syria's immunisation rates have plummeted from more than 90 per cent before the conflict to around 68 per cent. Polio mainly affects children under five and cannot be cured, only prevented.

"All the children (paralysed) are under two years old, so they were all born after immunisation services fell apart," Bari told Reuters. "No doubt the outbreak will be large."

Children living in unsanitary conditions are especially vulnerable to the virus, which spreads via faecal-oral transmission and contaminated food and water.

More than 20 million children, including 1.6 million in Syria, are to be vaccinated in Syria and neighbouring countries over the next six months, U.N. agencies said last week.

The number of polio cases in Pakistan so far this year is 56, roughly the same as the number of cases in the country in 2012. By December 2013, this number is expected to exceed last year’s record. To exacerbate the situation, a recent report concluded that the person heading the Prime Minister’s Polio Monitoring and Coordination Cell for the past two years has not been actively involved in the government’s efforts for the cause because he had taken up another position with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, in violation of the Cell’s rules. While polio continues to emerge, the Polio Monitoring and Coordination Cell has been having internal management issues resulting in disconcertion. These updates elucidate that the government’s efforts to freeze polio in its tracks have not been very impactful. They further underscore the need to develop a more effective campaign and prioritise the eradication of polio, particularly in the Fata region, rather than becoming entangled in the web of mismanagement by the Coordination Cell.

The implications of polio not being eradicated should be enough to augment a massive campaign across provinces. Not only do children lead handicapped lives, they must live in that condition in a country where facilities for the handicapped barely exist. Resistance to giving children the polio vaccine still prevails and this is where health workers need to correct people’s misconceptions. Also, for a country whose passport already holds little trust with other countries, a potential travel ban on Pakistanis would be an even greater blow.

It is a shame that Pakistan lags behind India, which, with its much larger population and existence in the same region, has managed to eliminate polio from the country altogether. Instead of being caught in a never-ending cycle of mismanagement, the Cell must refocus on its objectives. We must finish off polio before we embarrassingly allow the number of cases this year to supersede last year’s number.

let just made some clarification , polio was candidates for eradication because its human host is needed for it's development and spread you remove that part of the chain and , then there won't be any polio .

for that we use two type of vaccine , Sabin and Salk , Sabin is dead polio virus that only immunize you and you must inject it , Salk is live weakened virus that you must eat it and after that you not only immunized , but also can't be a carrier.

finding strain of virus in in sewage of Israel , Palestine and Egypt don't mean the virus originated there . it means somebody who is infected (not had received any vaccine) or is a carrier ( didn't received vaccine or received Sabin Vaccine) has defecated in those area .

and if you ask how somebody who has not received vaccine become a carrier not diseased it's simple the polio virus have low attack rate only less than 10% of infected show clinical signs and 1% become paralyzed.
so finding the strain in those countries mean that terrorists used those countries for infiltrating Syria .

.
Never knew viruses/diseases could belong to a country or a race

seriously ?!?!?!?!
