KOLKATA, India — A bomb blast in India’s northeast on Thursday killed at least five people and wounded another six, police said.

Officer Bani Brata Basu said the explosion occurred near Jalpaiguri, a town nearly 700 kilometers (440 miles) north of Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal state.

Police are investigating whether the blast was carried out by any rebel group fighting for independence or wide autonomy in the region.

The Press Trust of India news agency quoted Officer Shashikant Pujari as saying the bomb was rigged to a bicycle.

Pujari said the explosion might have been carried out by the Kamatpur Liberation Organization, an insurgent group which was observing a “Martyrs’ Day” in memory of its members who have been killed by government forces.

Separatists accuse the Indian government of exploiting the natural resources of the northeastern region while doing little for the indigenous people, most of whom are ethnically closer to the people of Myanmar and China than to other Indians

the separatists group you are talking about is probably Kamtapur Liberation Organization

they were never closer to the people of chinna or myanmar
all they want is a separate state with 10 districts(6 from wb and 4 from assam)
they are a terrorist organization who were trained by ULFA and funded by ISI

Never heard of this 'sepratist movement' before.

RIP to the dead.

Every small time extortion gang calls itself a 'separatist movement' these days.

BTW this one is not even a separatist movement in any sense, they want a separate state within the Indian Union, like Telengana. And they think the best way to get a state is to do terror acts.

India should not deal with them with Iron Fist alone. Their legit demands must be met in return for shunning terrorism.

I think the people affected should be talked to.

The tribals or Adivasis are the most marginalized right now in Indian society because they do not have a voice.

They must be given more of a voice.

Unfortunately terrorist gangs are more into extorting than actually representing people's causes.

I was surprised to know that the agitation for the state of Jharkhand started pretty soon after indpendence led by the tribals.

The ULFA blames the central government for taking away considerable oil resources without helping the northeast region to develop

The exploration of mineral resources has become a contentious issue and has fuelled conflict in the region. In Meghalaya, the extraction of uranium and coal has been a problem. On June 11, 2007 Shillong was paralysed by a 36-hour bandh called by the Khasi Student’s Union protesting against a public hearing on uranium mining in Meghalaya’s West Khasi Hill district.2The huge oil reserve spotted in Nagaland, reported to contain oil reserves worth billions, is also a major issue of contention. The Nagas fear that they will be displaced when oil extraction begins. Local leaders have insisted on assurances of new land allotment besides monetary payments before relocating their people.3 The Nagas have demanded assurances that their lush jungles, rivers and rice paddies will be protected against oil spills and other environmental hazards. Further, they are demanding a share of the profit to be given to tribal councils for local development. Violent protests in Nagaland are likely to occur if oil extraction begins without considering these demands.

Its not separatist in the classical sense.
They want their own State(within India) now.

And after Telangana, everyone thinks the best way to pressure GoI is to become violent.

Sepratist movements in India are not like Pakistan where they demand sepretion from whole country.

India rite from start worked on state system where States have larger autonomy for social cases and only national issues stay with Central govt. So sepretion from current state is the way in India, unlike where Balochistan, pushtoons want sepretion from PAKISTAN.
Keep away North West Kashmir (Valley), No one wants to go out of India but fight for their rights within against other states. So u guyz can sleep in piece. i mean peace. :D

Telnagana is not yet a reality mate

@Contrarian

What does independence mean in Telangana's context?

What sort of authority is handed to the state govts under this model?

Are we talking Provincial/State autonomy?
