wow, after read the list, China's defence spent too too low low low , only 1.18% of GDP in 2021. you guys talking about increasing from 2% to ......., hope one day china's defence spent can reach 2%
Trump did say Putin was a genius.Putin did what Trump asked for with the suffering of Ukrainians and Russians as the price.
Reality is that the threat from Russia to *any* of the NATO countries is overblown. Russians spend less than KSA/India on their defense capabilities and have a large but conscripted military. Hardly the kind which is useful for expeditionary campaigns and those too against the NATO alliance which is not only very capable militarily (collectively) but also has significant other levers like economic strangulation (case in point the punishment being meted out to Russia).
All these raises to defense spendings are the result of chronic underspending which is now catching up with Europe. They made hay while the sun was shining with relative peace on their borders. They no longer have this luxury. Welcome to the club Europe!
They think that raising their defense spending will make their country stronger. I beg to differ. They're wrong. Raising defense spending from like 2% of GDP to 2.5% of GDP will only eat their economy growth more. While maybe they have a boost in their military strength in short time, it will weaken their countries fundamental over time. it is very contradiction with the most important problem that they have to solve today. Economy recovery.
With this European countries panic driven policies, We can be sure that they will have harder time to mend their economy problem (that caused by this war) in near future. They can have shiny F-35 today, but as long as a hot war between NATO and Russia doesn't happen, those F-35 will sooner and later become scrap metals. Any man made military weapons also have their age. And when it happen, how can they buy another shiny American's Jet Fighters in the future, when their economy has taken a toll because of their overspending military budget today? Will they raise their economy spending to 3% comparative to their GDP next? To get the new shiny American's 6th generation jet fighter to counter Russia in the future?
What will happen when Europe economy has taken a toll because of overspending of military budget? Will they become more aggressive and become the aggressor to divert their people angry to other countries? They won't invade Russia, but I'm sure that the countries in the southern part of Europe are yummy to be used as political diversion.
The best example how should a country become stronger is China. They never raise their military spending from 1.5% (or less?) of GDP to like 2% or more. They raise their military spending comparative to their economy growth. That's why China become stronger and stronger even without sacrifice their economy growth. That is the most ideal way to make a country stronger. Not only militarily, but also in their fundamental strength.
Uni Soviet didn't need to spend 50% of their GDP on defense, yet they were collapse because of over spending on military budget. You are talking as if European countries were spending 50% of their GDP on defence.
