Pakistan Navy has signed a contract on 27 June 2012 with EMT (Germany) to buy the LUNA UAV System for its shore surveillance units (mainly Marines). A total of 8 birds along with 2 ground control stations have been contracted for purchase. This has been done after a launch of official tenders and technical scrutiny of around 8 UAV systems five of which were offered from China. Other contenders were Selex (Falco) and a company from Spain. In the end LUNA was selected for its price and because of its easy interoperability from small spaces. Pakistan Army is already using LUNA UAV for intel ops. The LUNA model contracted by the PN has an operational range of about 100kms.

THIS UAN IS "EMT Luna X 2000-II". IT IS AN ADVANCED/NEWER MODEL OF THE PREVIOUS THAT IS IN USE WITH PAK ARMY.

Luna X 2000-II, is a German unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and produced by EMT Penzberg of Germany.

Luna recovered by soldiers It is intended for close reconnaissance (over the hill, up to 100 km away), transmitting live video data (visual or infrared) or taking higher resolution still images, but it can also perform other tasks such as particle sampling, ESM/Electronic countermeasures (radio/radar jamming), depending on its payload. The UAV is launched with a simple bungee catapult and then follows a pre-programmed course, that can be altered in flight if necessary. After its mission it automatically lands with the help of a parachute and impact dampers. It is an ultra light in weight i.e. less than 40 kg.

^ Air frame is not the issue neither is the engine , launch vehicles , control stations as we do plenty of that. Real deal is the navigation , communication, surveillance & data processing embedded systems and electronics on board.

Oscar can shed some light on it.

I don't know exactly how advanced the research is at Army signals labs (EME etc) and stuff, however, we won't be able to solve the communication and encryption problems unless we have assets in space.

Regarding electronics + data processing, any of the 'now' commercially available, very low voltage microprocessors can do the job brilliantly. We actually don't have an excuse not to do it!

Furthermore, optronics and radars (surveillance i.e, SAR) are a different story altogether. Those unfortunately no one will be willing to transfer.

Think of it like this. In 1994, Turkey's working knowledge of radars was almost zilch. They started all the work at METU in 1994, and now look at them... :)

Edit: Microelectronics and motors such as (actuators, servos, sensors etc etc) don't know, how far has Pakistan come in the past decade.

We need to start somewhere.. We have to loose the prevailing mindset of that we can't do it. Most Pakistani students, who I knew, had this strange goal in mind: I'll get my PhD and then get married! What kind of mindset is that? No goals.... no ambitions to do something great in life! :(
