A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight to Karachi from the Benazir Bhutto International Airport was forced to abort takeoff after a federal minister and some other passengers protested against non-functioning of the plane’s air-conditioning system on Sunday.

However, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, the president of Awami Muslim League (AML) who was also travelling on the flight, preferred to keep away from the protest.

“Let him disembark if he wants. But I shall travel on the flight,” Sheikh Rashid was quoted as saying by a source.

The source said the Karachi-bound PK-301 was taxing when one of the passengers started protesting. Shortly, some other passengers joined him.

The source said the crew members tried to convince the protesters that the air-conditioning system would start working soon after the plane takes off.

But minister for inter-provincial coordination Riaz Hussain Pirzada (PML-N leader from Bahawalpur) asked the crew members to stop the plane and disembark him.

As a result, the cabin crew informed the pilot who immediately contacted the authorities concerned and returned the plane to the terminal. The protesting passengers were disembarked and shifted to the passenger lounge.

The source said as many as 12 passengers, including Riaz Hussain Pirzada, decided not to travel on the flight.

However, the other passengers, including Sheikh Rashid, remained seated in the plane that took off at about 12.20pm against its scheduled time of 10am.

When PIA spokesman Mashud Tajwar was contacted, he said some of the passengers protested over the non-functioning of the AC.

“One of the passengers, whose name was not known, led the protesters which caused a 45-minute delay in the flight.”

He said usually the air-conditioning system of a plane is switched off during takeoff and is switched on when it is airborne.

The federal minister and the APML chief could not be contacted for their comments.

lol, Busson main aisay hi boltay hain... AC is not cooling when the bus start moving it will cool itself... Just came to know, now this has been started in our Airoplane as well... Lol

Good thing now ministers are traveling with normal flights, and Government is taking part in protest against themselves lol...

Funny story really...

Something similar happened to me once.

It was an A310 from Isb to Dubai. The plane was very hot and I asked why wasn't the AC working?

They said that once the engines start the AC will work.

And I was like 'What the heck?'. What do you have the GPU and APU for? And the attendant had no clue.

It was boiling in there.

Sometimes on the ground, an airplane gets air for the air conditioning from a ground supply provided by the airport. At some point before leaving the gate, this has to be disconnected, causing the A/C to go off like when the plane is being pulled by a tractor to line up with the taxiway before take-off. Then, when the engines are started, they start to produce bleed air, so the A/C comes back on. It may go off again if bleed air is turned off for takeoff to conserve power which was probably the case in this incident. Even the cabin lights are switched off many times before take-off.

So what's was the big deal? We South Asians love to crib especially these darned VVIPs and their chamchas who make a mountain out of a molehill.

Idiots! :pissed:

What is the big deal? Isn't the minister aware that use of aircondtioners in all government offices is not allowed, so if he is following the rules, he should be used to not having an aircondtioner at all.

The switching off of cabin lights has got nothing to do with power during take off.

Nor does the AC system. 99% of the time, the AC is kept on, the engines aren't so low on power that you have to turn off the AC system. Besides, airlines do a derated takeoff most of the time. If the AC needs to be turned off during take off to get more power, then airlines wouldn't be doing a derated takeoff with the AC on.

But here we are all talking without specifics so can't say anything. The pax load, cargo, take off thrust applied etc all need to be factored in before we can say that the AC was turned off or was it a genuine fault.

So come to point then and bash PMLN, why the elaborate tale of non-working A/Cs in PIA. You can't care less for PIA or A/Cs :coffee:
