Pakistan had told the US administration of the possible cancellation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s recent visit to the US to counter Washington’s intent to seriously dent Islamabad’s nuclear programme as well as its Afghan and Kashmir policies to the advantage of India.

Informed sources told The News that Washington’s draft joint statement for the said visit which was shared with Islamabad for consent, days before the departure of the prime minister to the US, was found offensive by the Pakistani authorities.

In a high-level meeting held under Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Washington’s draft joint statement was discussed. To the dismay of Islamabad, the draft joint statement was found to be preparing the ground for a serious attack on the country’s nuclear programme besides hurting Pakistan’s Afghan and Kashmir policies.

In the meeting, it was suggested by Interior Minsiter Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan that Washington should be conveyed that the prime minister would prefer cancelling the visit instead of agreeing to the US desires. The Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatmi also endorsed what Ch Nisar had suggested.

The premier was advised that visiting the US in such conditions and without getting the draft joint statement changed in Pakistan’s favour, would be disastrous for the country. There was unanimity that Pakistan could not compromise on such vital issues. It was agreed that Pakistan will not talk on suggestions like limiting its nuclear and strategic programme.

In these conditions, the prime minister had decided to frankly convey to Washington that the Pakistani premier could not undertake the US visit unless the draft joint statement was changed to the satisfaction of Islamabad.

Consequently, Washington was conveyed that the prime minister would prefer cancelling his visit rather than agreeing to what the US administration was suggesting Islamabad to do. This move from Islamabad had panicked Washington which agreed to drop the issues that were of serious concern to Pakistan from the draft joint statement to save the visit from cancellation.

To prepare the ground for the visit as per Islamabad’s satisfaction, the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Foreign Affair Sartaj Aziz and Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry were made to rush to Washington.

Foreign Office sources said that because of the timely reaction by Islamabad to the inappropriate move from Washington, the security and foreign policy red lines of Pakistan remained secure. The FO sources as well as some military officials are all-praise for Ch Nisar for how he defended Pakistan and presented Islamabad’s case at high-level meetings with key US officials during the PM’s visit to Washington.

“There has been plain speaking from the Pakistan side on how the US has been unfair to Pakistan,” a source said, adding that Washington was frankly told that despite Pakistan’s sacrifices and its decades old relations with the US it is unfairly dealt with by the latter to the advantage of India.

The Americans were told that step-motherly treatment was meted out to Pakistan whereas there had been hardly any reaction from Washington to the serious human rights violations and recent attacks on minorities in India.

The sources said that the US defence secretary at the very outset of his meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz and his delegation had stated that he was pro-India. To this the Pakistan side responded so effectively that the defence secretary ended his meeting with a statement that now he is pro-India as well as pro-Pakistan.

Well. We do not take the treatment of minorities inside Pakistan to USA. I do not see how Pakistan can even ask US to act on India's internal issues.
Btw if the above said news is true, then a bold decision by PM Sharif.

Reading the joint statement after their meeting, it seems like nothing was accomplished besides keeping things the way they are. But if the contents in the article are true, there is some tension between Pakistan and US over certain issues.

I don't know where the issue is. If the Pakistani PM and his people were able to change American defense sec's mind and the entire flow of statements and topics, then it should be considered a success for Pakistan's foreign policy, just like what happened with Russia's relations, and later the decision to sell Weapons to Pakistan. Similarly, the US is considering more -16's sales to Pakistan. So I think the visits from NS and then followed by RS went well from Pakistan's standpoint.

Its good to see Pakistani leadership using mature diplomacy and getting to a middle ground with their American counter parts. That's good negotiation skills. There aren't any "real" relationship disturbing issues IMO.

You don't think Pakistan is upset over the discriminatory treatment over the nuclear issue? Pakistan wants a similar civilian nuclear deal India has, so it can attain easier entry into NSG, but US insists on caps on missiles and tactical nukes.

Because India is a terrorist country and genocide of minorities is not ignorable.

I agree. The over all game is changing, Pakistan is closing to Russia after China and that is allowing Pak more options for Economy as well as defense. And soon Pak will be relying on CPEC majorly for Economy as well. All these factors combines together will drastically decrease the importance of US for Pakistan. The move by Pakistan and its +ve response from US is an indication of weak US control over Pak Strong Pak decisions against US policies.

The US doesn't have an issue with Pakistan being strong from an economy's standpoint. In fact, think about it, if Pakistan was like South Korea in 1990's, you think the mess of terrorism and Taliban would've happened? No!! Everyone would be busy making a better living, better education, better jobs and businesses. Financial freedom is the best thing ever!!

And that also means that the US doesn't have to worry about Pakistan or Afghanistan as countries becoming a Taliban state like the concerns and facts were years ago. And that also means, the US would've saved billions she spent on WOT in this region. So a healthy and strong Pakistan (or any country), is in US's best interest. A stronger Pakistan means more business for the US defense sector and it means more opportunity for US investors, and means more opportunity for the Pakistanis.

I think the Pakistanis need to start looking into a bigger picture as to how the US or anyone else can help them grow their economy and the country. That is the biggest help for Pakistan and the US can easily provide that. A true honest partnership should begin now. And all disagreements can be resolved through negotiations, like what happened in the past two visits by NS and RS.

If India was to wipe out its minorities there is nothing Pakistan could do. Take some medication and go to bed

Only you Pakistanis will/shall/would whine about it. Thanks to ISIS, the spotlight of terrorism have been taken away from Pakistan. Too bad about losing the title
