PM unveils big defence purchase plan
Fighter aircraft, surface-to-air missiles, radar, armaments to be procured for Air Force

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday unveiled her government's big defence purchase plan to procure fighter aircraft, surface-to-air missile system, helicopters, air-defence radars and armaments for Bangladesh Air Force soon.

Besides, she said, the government has already approved a development plan for constructing necessary infrastructure at Cox's Bazar for smooth operation of fighter jets and transport aircraft to ensure security of economic activities in the vast maritime territories and relief operation in remote areas to protect people during natural calamity.

The prime minister revealed the plans while addressing the Bangladesh Air Force officers on the occasion of the Air Force's annual exercises titled 'WINTEX-2010' at the BAF main fighter base at Kurmitola inside Dhaka Cantonment.

"Within just one year of assuming office, initiative has been taken to procure fighter aircraft, surface-to-air missile system, helicopter, air-defence radar, and armaments," she said.

The process is also underway to arrange necessary funds for implementing the development plans for the Air Force, she added.

"The budget allocation for the Bangladesh Air Force in the present fiscal year is the biggest in the history of the force," she told the function.

The prime minister also said various welfare projects for the members of the Air Force are under active consideration of the government.

"The present government will take all possible measures to build the Air Force as an up-to-date force by equipping it with modern technology-based war weapons," she added.

Sheikh Hasina said her government is committed to building a modern, knowledge-based air force excelled in training and technology in order to ensure security of the country and its people.

Besides, the government is giving attention to ensuring financial solvency of the members of the Air Force, she said.

"In this regard, our main goal is to increase participation of Air Force members in the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission. I have already talked to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and presented our logical demands in various international forums."

The prime minister said the number of Bangladesh Air Force members in UN Peacekeeping Mission has now gone up to 467, almost double in comparison to the previous year.

Besides, the government is considering sending 100 to 150 more Air force members to the UN missions.

Regarding the MIG-29 Purchase Case filed against her during the last BNP-Jamaat government, Hasina said the then government had kept the MIG-29 unused for a long time just to put her in trouble.

She urged the Air Force members to know about the real history of the liberation war of 1971 and prepare themselves as confident, skilled and ideal military men.

Earlier, the prime minister witnessed spectacular flying display of BAF fighter and transport planes and helicopters, including MIG-29 fighter plane, at the Kurmitola Base.

During the air-raid exercises code named 'EX-THUNDER', BAF jets showed various modern aerobatic tactics of air warfare when troops were dropped from helicopter by rappelling while transport aircraft dropped logistics with parachute which is indigenously made by the Bangladesh Air Force, said an ISPR press release.

Earlier, on her arrival at the BAF Base, the Prime Minister was received by Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal SM Ziaur Rahman.

Security Adviser to the Prime Minister Maj Gen (Retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique, Defence Secretary Khandaker Md Asaduzzaman and Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Abul Kalam Azad were also present.

President Zillur Rahman yesterday asked the army chief to take necessary measures for modernising the armed forces through increasing facilities for training on latest military know-how.

The president, also the supreme commander of the armed forces, gave the directive when Army Chief General M Abdul Mubeen called on him at Bangabhaban and apprised him of various matters of the service, including his upcoming India tour.

The army chief will go to India on March 14 on a six-day visit at the invitation of his Indian counterpart. He will return on March 20.

During the meeting, President Zillur Rahman said necessary measures should be taken to increase professional skills of the army. "It is very urgent to increase training facilities and share experiences in this regard."

Recalling the BDR carnage, the president expressed his deep shock over the incidents that took place on February 25 last year, and enquired about the family members of the victims.

He asked the army chief to ensure that the family members of the victims receive government facilities.

The president lauded the role of the army chief, also the chief of Bangladesh Olympic Association, in successfully completing the South Asian Games last month.

Bangladesh is militarily much weaker to protect its economic strength....
it has immense potential to be a manufacturing base..more peaceful than Pakistan and proximity to India can be made more advantageous for mutual benefit.

For all the countries why our military chiefs have to visit India? Is it to get an Indian understanding about the new purchase of military hardwares?

May be to assure them that we not going to attack India. AL is a smart party, they will still keep India assured while purchasing all the hardware from China. Syed Ashraf got full time job to apease China.:rofl:

Because India is BD's largest neighbour. Because Indian Officials also visit BD on goodwill visits. Because by this, both sides are better able to appreciate each other's concerns and challenges.

But, another old-time information about Pakistan Awami League role to initiate good relationship with China. H. S. Suhrawardy was the Prime of Pakistan. He understood the importance of Chinese friendship vis-a-vis India.

Maulana Bhshani was regarded as a communist sympathiser at that time. So, the then PM sent Bhashani to Peking. After the creation of BD, it was President Zia who took special care to make friendship with China.

Bhashani met Chairman Mao Tse Tung and the Pakistan-China friendship was initiated by the Bangali PM and a Bangali leader named Maulana Bhashani. It is, therefore, easy for AL to keep up with that spirit of AL-China friendship and turn it into BD-China one.

Both the political parties of BD are wooing Chinese support in its defence against its two neighbours. BNP openly, but AL covertly and by guising itself as the true friend of India.

These defence purchases are aimed at Myanmar. Nothing here to displease India. As long as BD does nothing to improve the condition and effectiveness of the army India will be content.

I doubt however that we can defeat Myanmar just from the air.

What is not disclosed by these news reports is that BD cancelled tender for purchase of 7 tanks as the lowest proposals were from China and Pakistan.

WOW ! That's revealing. Thanks for keeping us in the loop. I have come to conclude that without the break up of Malu land into pieces, there wouldn't be any peace in South-Aisa. Need equilibrium in power, brother.

Pray for the mercenaries to pick a war with Burmese. In that way, GOD's mysterious act would be seen. A very important note is that IND wouldn't want BD mercenaries to win over Burmese and Chineses would throw their weight behind Junta to give those mercenaries a good beating.

A friend of mine participated in the tender process but was informed the whole things has been cancelled.
