PM Shehbaz green-lights 10,000MW solar project to cut imported fuel use

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday gave the go-ahead for the execution of 10,000 megawatts solar energy project to reduce the import bill of costly diesel and furnace oil.

The prime minister made the decision during a meeting called to discuss measures for providing “major relief to the masses”, the state-run wire service reported.

The prime minister stressed upon the authorities that the electricity should be generated through solar instead of imported fuel.

The meeting was informed that the solar plan would help save billions of dollars.

In the first phase, the solar energy would be supplied to the government buildings, tube wells operating on electricity and diesel and domestic consumers with low consumption.

The prime minister directed the relevant authorities to ensure the early installation of solar plants to provide relief to the people before the next summer season.

He asked the authorities concerned to immediately start the execution of the project.

He also called for holding a conference of all stakeholders by next week before the bidding process.

In a tweet later in the day, the PM said that a major chunk of electricity was produced from “imported fuel whose prices have gone up in recent months”.

“Our National Solar Energy Initiative is aimed at substituting costly energy with cheap solar power, which will provide massive relief to people and save precious foreign exchange,” he added.

Last month, the premier had said the government would soon launch 6,000MW to 7,000MW solar energy projects to cut dependence on imported fuel.

Talking to a delegation of the Pakistan America Business Forum in Islamabad, PM Shehbaz had said the government was committed to ensuring favourable conditions for foreign investors with the aim to strengthen the national economy.

One loophole I can already see giving the solar panels to small concern...putting government buildings and tubewells on local solar, rather than generating energy from the grid. Within a year the government solar panels will fall into disarray, poor maintenance and upkeep practices, and you are back to zero.

You can't just give everyone a solar panel on subsidy and claim you have generated 10,000 MW worth of energy.

Think the whole thing through, select a suitable location (not Bahawalpur like last time), put the infrastructure in place, and make a solar power company which generates 10,000 MW and then distributes it just like any other power plant.

The grand loan was taken with People of Pakistan's guarantee
75% cost of solar plant will be paid by People of Pakistan , and the relative only paid 25% of cost and became owner of Power plant why because they could not hire cheap labor to clean the Solar panels? huh

see how the UAE gov did it,
they launched a project and they didn't buy any equipment,
they gave space, and asked companies to come and bid for power / watt.

this way, the Gov was clear of any technical problems and the winning bidder would have to supply power at the best competitive rate.

This is a great visionary project that will change the future landscape of Pakistan.

Considering the nation will be on the financial hook for this kind of commitment and therefore regardless of what government is in power, it’s in the national interest to have this done right, I hope they look at where solar panels are most feasible.

Baluchistan; particularly in a corridor, roughly between Quetta and Gwadar would be best. If solar parks can be built there and a power line built to Gwadar and across to Karachi it would be best.

A high voltage line along the coast could also allow power coming in to Gwadar from Iran, based on natural gas or oil to be an alternative source of electricity and make the entire coast attractive to investers looking into setting up factories with FDI.

As part of all this, I hope the government convinces Chinese manufacturers to move their plants to Pakistan and doesn’t just import solar panels.
