PM seeks Japan’s help in energy sector

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday asked Japan to expand its development assistance portfolio in the country particularly in energy and infrastructure sectors.

“We look forward to greater level of cooperation between the two countries in the areas of trade, investment, development, security, energy, institution building and capacity building,” the prime minister told Japanese deputy foreign minister Shinsuke Sugiyama, who is visiting Pakistan for the bilateral political consultations.

Japan is one of three leading development aid donors for Pakistan. Over the past few years the Japanese aid has been primarily focused on water supply and sewerage; emergency and reconstruction; and educational and health sectors.

While Pakistan is keen for increase in development assistance in multiple sectors, the Pakistani side in their talks in all the interactions Mr Sugiyama had in Islamabad, including the one with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, emphasised on increasing aid for energy and infrastructure development projects.

“Economic stability and implementation of Pakistan's development agenda is essential for our success which in turn is vital for regional peace and security,” the prime minister said.

Terming Japan as a “valuable friend and development partner,” Mr Sharif said Tokyo’s “investments would be most crucial especially in energy sector and infrastructure development”. The need for assistance in energy and infrastructure sectors was also emphasised at the talks at the Foreign Office.

Business is business, and development is more important than anything else.

It's not China I'm worried about, it's unfortunately some of our own naive Pakistanis that want Pakistan to be involved in every business China is involved in, and support it in every way possible.
