Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday approved, in principle, the financing plan for the Diamer-Bhasha dam and ordered the secretary of water and power to start physical work on the dam before the end of 2017.

Secretary Ministry of Water and Power Mohammad Younus Dagha presented the dam's financial proposal to the prime minister today, Radio-Pakistan reported.

The prime minister instructed Younus Dagha and the secretary of planning and finance to expedite the completion of the financial process and begin the physical process before the end of next year.

This financial plan, made on a self-reliance basis, proposes that construction of the dam will receive a portion of the required funding from allocations made by the Public Sector Development Programme and from resources generated by Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda).

The rest of the financing for the dam will be arranged on a commercial basis by the Ministry of Water and Power either through Wapda or through leasing its existing projects.

The construction of Diamer-Bhasha dam has been considerably delayed. The project was originally scheduled for completion in 2016, and then 2019, when a decision about its construction was taken by the military government of Gen Pervez Musharraf, but work on the project did not progress at all during his rule.

I think small allocations will continue to be made from PSDP budget and if the GoP agrees to fund entirely from its own resources, it will be the biggest project ever completed by Pakistan

I think it will be completed around 2030-35 and will end up sucking 18-22 billion dollars due to long delays in the project

I am more than happy for as long as they ca finally complete the project which is unlikely for another decade

Mubarook . Very good news. :yahoo:

How many MW / GW?
Water...?
we have been hearing such news since 2007.

But the GoP is in much better position to fund the project from her own resources thanks to gdp growth by over 80%

Thus far The GoP have finally been able to purchase land from the effected families and about 80% of required land have been bought frok the land owners so I guess it will take another 1-2 years to purhase remaining 20% and then physical work can actually begin

thats 4500mw of elecricity with 8 million acre feet of water reservoir

The biggest dam in Pakistan, The biggest hydropower project in Pakistan. Bigger than both Tarbela and Kalabagh

Very good step. Purchasing land was not easy as it was creating loads of fueds between families and communities and at one point if I remember correctly things were seriously about to get out of hand with the kohistanis. There were so many meetings but finally the disputes were settled and the land was bought. Remember @WAJsal . boy that was a close one.

With that it seems the work is about to start and this dam is a massive need of the hour and we desperately need it not only for energy needs but also water storage capacities.

We need a few more large scale events.

Nawaza completes this and he can put it up there with the motorway venture in his boasting speeches.

Government hasn't bought all the land yet, we have land in Goner Farm, Chilas, and we are sitting ducks for years now. I can't say how long it might take before this project is completed.

For those who haven't seen the site it's massive, i think ones the dam is completed Chilas will be under water, as per some. Not sure about Chilas but Goner Farm will obviously be under water.

@unleashed ,@shimshali , what information do you guys have?

well actually i heard that the land in chilas had already been bought with them getting crores. but these ungrateful people have not had enough and are demanding more money. the dam area is so huge that it takes hours to travel the complete length of the dam. also the Chinese had started the realignment of the road as the old KKH would be submerged if the dam is built..

I am outdated regarding this project. The last news i heard about this project was regarding its inclusion in CPEC.
