KARACHI: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, during a high level meeting in Karachi, announced to launch the metro bus, to be named Green Line, for the city for which the federal government would provide Rs15 billion, Express News reported.

The metro bus is part of the rapid transport service project.

The premier, along with Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique, arrived in Karachi on Thursday, Express News reported earlier.

Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah received the premier upon his arrival.

During his one-day visit to the metropolitan city, Prime Minister Nawaz headed a high-level meeting at the Governor House, where the DG Rangers briefed him about the Karachi operation and the law and order situation in the city.

The prime minister, while addressing the meeting, said he appreciated the suggestions given regarding the operation. He added that everyone had said that “the operation against criminals should happen quickly.”

“Soon after your suggestions, we initiated the operation,” the premier said.

Expressing fears of backlash in major cities because of the Zarb-e-Azb operation, the premier emphasised that law enforcement agencies should ensure that the security situation remains under control.

Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan, the Sindh chief minister, acting IG Sindh, DG Rangers and officials of intelligence agencies were present during the meeting.

The prime minister also supervised another important meeting at the Governor House regarding development projects, particularly mega-projects in Karachi.

The Sindh chief secretary briefed the premier about the delay in the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) project and said the biggest hurdle was encroachment in the right of way. He informed him that the Sindh government needs massive funding to clear the area and relocate encroachments.

According to sources, PM Nawaz will also meet representatives of various political parties, including the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), the Mutahidda Qaumi Movement (MQM), Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N).

KARACHI (Web Desk) - Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday announced Rs15 billion for the Bus Rapid Tansit (BRT) system in the metropolis.

The federal government will construct the project – to be called Green Line – without any delay, he said.

PM Nawaz said that share of the Sindh and Karachi City government will be borne by the federal government.

He said the government was fully aware of the transport problems of Karachi and said the rapid bus system will bring about a revolution in the transportation system for the residents of Karachi, who will be getting a fast and affordable service.

During his visit, the Prime Minister also held a meeting with a representative delegation of heads of political parties, business community and civil society.

Earlier, Chief Secretary Sindh and Director General Pakistan Rangers Sindh briefed the premier about the ongoing targeted operation in Karachi.

(There was one member here really peeved about no BRT in Karachi, hope he/ she finds some solace in this news. Though I am not sure about merits/ demerits of Green line BRT.)

KARACHI: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has announced a package for the development of a fast and efficient metro bus system, Green Line, for Karachi during his visit to discuss issues related to security with the Sindh government.

The premier said that the federal government is aware of the transport issues faced by the financial capital.

Speaking to media representatives, the premier said the federal government was keen to revolutionise Karachi's transport system.

The prime minister also announced that the federal government would immediately release Rs15 billion for development of metro bus routes, while the remaining cost would have to be borne by the City District Government Karachi (CDGK).

Prime Minister Sharif also chaired a meeting over Karachi's law and security situation at the official residence of Sindh Governor Ishratul Ibad.

According to sources, the prime minister reprimanded ministers over the worsening law and order situation in the city.

The premier showed displeasure over the way the affairs were being run by the Sindh government.

He asked why the directive of shifting the Karachi’s anti-terrorism courts to the city’s Malir Cantonment area was not implemented.

Moreover, Prime Minister Sharif came down hard on the Sindh government and questioned why the construction of a high-security prison and purchasing of modern weapons for police had not been done.

The premier was flanked by Federal Interior Minister Nisar Ali Khan, Federal Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafiq, Central Information Secretary for Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Senator Mushahidullah Khan and party member Abdul Hakim Baloch.

During the meeting, the premier was also briefed on Karachi's rapid transport plan.

The prime minister is in Karachi for a one-day visit, primarily to review the law and order situation in the city.

Earlier, Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah welcomed the premier at the airport.

Soon after arriving in the city, the prime minister went to the residence of Nawab Charagh Marri and expressed condolence over the death of Baloch leader Khair Bakhsh Marri.

KCR is being funded by JICA of Japan, consider this a bonus ;p

But the fact of the matter is, KCR is simply an issue of removing encroachments, which CDGK needs to do.

I believe what officials from Sindh transport deptt told PM that 15 billion was required in order to get free the land from encroachments. So, I wonder if this 15b would be utilised to remove the encroachments to get KCR started.
