Tibetans should redouble their efforts to “reunite” the Dalai Lama with compatriots inside the Chinese-ruled region, the prime minister of the Tibetan government-in-exile has urged.

Lobsang Sangay said Tibet has seen 60 years of destruction of its civilisation, culture and identity by the Chinese since the Dalai Lama fled to India in 1959.

Sangay and the Dalai Lama were speaking on Saturday at a public event in the northern Indian town of Dharamsala to mark the beginning of the 60th year of the Tibetan spiritual leader’s exile.

“Thousands and thousands of Tibetans have been killed and have died for the cause of Tibet. Many of them have burned themselves alive,” Sangay said.

He urged Tibetans to strengthen efforts to make the return of the Dalai Lama to his native land – and his former residence in Lhasa, the Potala palace – a reality.

“We Tibetan people, with the support of people of India and abroad, should strengthen our efforts to make his return to his Potala palace a reality,” Sangay said.

“Let us reunite the Dalai Lama with Tibetans inside Tibet, who have spent the last 60 years with a hope, with a dream to get a glimpse of the Dalai Lama in their lifetime.”

The Dalai Lama thanked India for giving him shelter to him. The Indian government was represented by the junior culture minister, Mahesh Sharma. Earlier this month, local media reported the Indian government had told top officials to avoid events held by Tibet’s government-in-exile to celebrate the Dalai Lama’s life in India, fearful of hurting relations with China.

Ram Madhav, a leader in the governing Bharatiya Janata party, expressed hope in his speech that the Dalai Lama “would be able to find a solution to the Tibetan issue through peaceful and democratic means that will facilitate your honourable return to your homeland”.

The Dalai Lama said he left Tibet in 1959 under difficult circumstances without knowing what would happen in the next 50 or 60 years.

“Today we are celebrating 60 years in exile where we could see what will happen to us in the future to a certain extent,” he said.

In the past he has said the issue of Tibet could be best resolved amicably through the middle way approach, by resuming dialogue with China and demanding true autonomy while remaining under Chinese rule.

First question that came to my mind:

How do these outlaws intend to fullfill/'redouble efforts'/'strengthen' their boss's wish of 'returning to Tibet'?

Apparently chanting 'om mani padme hom' all day is not gonna be enough:

Didnt they already abandon their homeland when they fled after their failed uprising? Now they beg for China to take them back now that Tibetan region is a prosperous 1?

LHASA - Southwest China's Tibet autonomous region reported 10-percent GDP growth last year, marking the 25th straight year of double-digit growth, local authorities said Wednesday.

Tibet's GDP reached 131.06 billion yuan ($20.5 billion) in 2017, according to statistics announced at the 11th Regional People's Congress.

Last year, the plateau region achieved a 23.9-percent increase in its fixed asset investments, totaling around 205 billion yuan, and raised the per capita disposable income of its urban and rural residents by 10.3 percent and 13.6 percent respectively.

Over the past five years, Tibet has remained one of the fastest growing provincial-level regions in China. Livelihoods, the environment, infrastructure and the region's competitive industries have all improved.

In 2018, Tibet set a target to achieve GDP growth of around 10 percent, with an 18-percent increase in fixed-asset investment as well as increases of more than 10 percent and 13 percent, respectively, for urban and rural per capita disposable incomes.

and if we look at Tibet's GDP in 2017, it's atually higher or close to some of the provinces in China proper.

Anyways, the Dalai lama has only another decade left, give or take- on this material world. Just let him perish in exile, with his soul perpetually away from his 'homeland'

The Chinese government has all the patience.

When they say this.... All is lost.
Instead of negotiating with the Chinese Government, they want to corner the Chinese Govt. and the latter really hates that.

I'm very sorry, but the position is taken.

@eldarlmari is already body-double for the Chinese Government.

Better luck next time.
oh i have to 'work for the chinese government' in order to voice my opinion about the DL LM.?

Oh no, no, not at all. The assignment is an honour, in some circles. Congratulations!

And I repeat: No, you don't have to, but your efforts will be recognised and honoured.

My post is itself an acknowledgement of your valuable role, in doing what you have done ably and well, from the first time that you posted: support the Chinese government.

also, its funny how the DL LM launched the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1959_Tibetan_uprising that ultimately failed, yet officially declared that he wants Tibet to continue being part of china https://economictimes.indiatimes.co...velopment-dalai-lama/articleshow/61767198.cms

CIA struck him off their payroll and now he cries to be taken back?

Just as you like. As it has always been, you are free to support whomever you want, however you want. We will hardly open fire on you; this is the Internet, after all. However, others are, in their turn, free to point out your bias and lack of balance, sometimes direct, sometimes through indirect sarcasm; that is a price that warring on Internet brings.

.
In the mean time he can return to South Tibet, which is currently occupied by India.

China might consider this request if he comes back with South Tibet. China might even consider helping with the liberation if India gives any trouble.
