ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan is expected to visit Malaysia later this month in what appears to be the part of damage control effort after Pakistan’s decision to stay away from the Kuala Lumpur summit last month, The Express Tribune learnt on Tuesday.

Official sources confirmed that the premier is scheduled to travel to Kaula Lumpur by the end of January.

The visit was due since last month Islamabad pulled out of the Kaula Lumpur conference at the eleventh hour after Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries voiced their reservations over the gathering of leaders from host Malaysia, Turkey, Iran and Qatar.

The summit was meant to discuss problems facing the Muslim countries and suggest way forward. Observers saw it as an attempt by Malaysia and other like-minded countries to create a new Islamic bloc, excluding Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations.

However, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad had dismissed such reports.

Pakistan, which initially accepted the invitation, had to withdraw from the summit on the grounds to maintain neutrality in the “Muslim Ummah”.

Subsequently, PM Imran spoke to his Malaysian counterpart over the phone to take him into confidence and offered him to visit after the summit.

It is believed that the prime minister will use the visit to explain Mahathir as to why Pakistan pulled out of the summit. Islamabad is also making efforts to reach out to Turkey.

Official circles are confident that the visit of Turkish President Recep Tayab Erdogan next month would help remove any mistrust between the two countries.

Officials further explained that Pakistan’s priority is to act as bridge among all the Muslim countries. They maintained that Pakistan tried hard even before the Kaula Lumpur summit to bring all Islamic countries on one platform.

However, those efforts could not make any headway because of time limitation.

The officials added that Pakistan would continue to strive for unity in the Muslim world to face common challenges and the upcoming visit of PM Imran to Malaysia is part of such efforts.

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Abu Dhabi Crow Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan visited Islamabad last month to discuss the situation which had arisen out of the Kaula Lumpur conference.

Unfortunate title.

Mr. Khan may have personal friendships to mend. Pakistan and Malaysian enjoy greater relationship beyond personal affairs.

I expect new trade treaties to be signed as well as advancement in bilateral cooperation in fields of education and agriculture.

Mahathir was the most vocal on the Kashmir issue for along with Pakistan, he stated that India had invaded Kashmir, and look how he was repaid. Dont think an apology will be enough. Pulling out of the summit is probably the worst decision made in 2019.

Malaysia and Turkey seem to understand why Pakistan pulled out. Ksa is seen as the bad guy for threatening Pakistan.
This trip shows,Pakistan desperately need both countries in FATF...

He will be hand delivering a letter from the Saudi's explaining why Imran could not attend the event the other day.

KSA is overplaying its hand, eventually they will be left alone to fend for themselves, their Ties with US and Israel will pay off badly once the common Saudi open his eyes .. Its still not too late for KSA better change their course before things go beyond their control . Honestly I don't want to see American Troops Entering Mecca and Medina claiming to protect the sites .

Question should be put to PM Khan, why did he cause unnecessary damage in the first place?

Is he so naive that he's so clueless of the sensitivities of brotherly nations and then gets slapped by a 35-year-old Prince? Does he not realise he's the Prime Minister of a nation and not just his pet political party?

The damage is already done. It was a diplomatic blunder by imran khan.

That’s the sad part being slapped around by an individual half your age and not even a king. KSA are overplaying their hands and it’ll come back to bite them.

But I believe it’s pointless and mute to even bother going. What’s he going to achieve? When the time for action came he out tail between legs and ran.

Why ask Turkey and Malaysia to stand up against Saudi Arabia and then backstab them? He pulled this stunt just to get $5 billion?

Makes sense. IK should have known the Saudis will pull his ears so he should have stopped acting like Naya Pakistan is here and Pakistan is independent Nation. He should have known there is no chance of another Muslim block. The Saudis showed Pakistan the mirror.

If Saudis can stop a meeting, then imagine the influence and power they have in our country. They could even stop us being independent nation because they might loose their pawn, I always wondered why Pakistan makes stupid decision regarding nation building.

I have been saying this for years.
Democratic Muslim countries need to make a block without any dictators or strong men countries.
OIC is a joke. Sooner or later new Islamic bloc will emerge.
Democratic Islamic Block
Objective: Promote Islamic Democratic Ideals for peace and prosperity of all.
