Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced plans to construct flats for Biharis who were left behind after the Liberation War in order to ease their residential crisis.

The premier made the announcement Thursday at the swearing-in of the newly-elected Dhaka North City Corporation mayor and councillors from both the DNCC and DSCC.

She said: “The government is looking for land to build flats for the trapped Biharis so they too can live decently. We are going to ensure that they are able to work and lead their lives like regular people.”

Referring to their plight, PM Hasina said: “Generations of Biharis – their fourth generation is here and confined to Geneva Camp in Mohammadpur. They have raised families and live in squalor.”

The prime minister also said the government will construct residential apartments for DNCC cleaning staff.

She said the DSCC cleaning staff will receive 13 residential apartment buildings, four of which have been constructed already.

She also advised the city corporations to take initiative in order to raise revenue.

PM Hasina further urged the cleaning staff and the elected public representatives to be vigilant about keeping the city clean.

All Biharis must be integrated into BD. Fact they supported Pakistan during 1971 should not mean that their children and grandchildren should suffer now.

The Biharis have been granted citizenship and they should now be moved out of refugee camp as they are no longer refugees and they should lead a normal life like all Bangladeshis and enjoy equal rights. Bangladesh is founded on the principles of equality and humanity.

Commendable move, but where is she going to find the land in Dhaka unless some of these buildings are demolished in the Geneva camp.

Muhammadpur is a residential area surrounded by residential areas five miles deep on all four sides.

Putting in out-of-place commercial activity in that area is neither planned nor possible because of zoning laws.

They have massive middle class Hong Kong style residential housing complexes however.

This is the JASHNE HAIDER E KARRAR a.s. SHIA MASJID in Muhammadpur. Such Masjids and Shia community organizations are common in that area.

the whole of dhaka is being slowly rebuilt... slums are being closed off one by one... govt contructed flat projects where slum dwellers can buy a flat and pay reasonable rent till equity... for about 30-40 years... the conditions of the old parts of the city (most of it) is dismal... any future earthquake will create massive casualty and her govt has been criticized in the past for not doing much... this is her doing something so that when things go south... she can save herself and not get blamed

We don't give our citizenship, they are being look into and at what date they migrated to Pakistan
