PM: Govt to create artificial forest to expand the Sundarbans

Hasina has instructed the authorities concerned regarding the expansion of mangrove forests in the coastal areas of the country.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced to create an artificial mangrove forest, to expand the Sundarbans, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where a 1320 MW coal-based power plant is being built by her government.

The prime minister made the above statement at an event titled “World Environment Day, Tree Fair and Campaign for Tree Plantation” held at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) on Sunday.

She said: “We have taken all our development projects by paying special attention to the Sundarbans so it does not get affected in any way.”

“The Sundarbans is not only a heritage site for Bangladesh, it is also important for the country’s existence…it survives for the Sundarbans. To expand the Sundarbans, we have already taken an initiative to create artificial mangrove forest,” she added.

She said that she has given directives to the authorities concerned for the expansion of mangrove forests in the coastal areas of the country.

“We are working on preserving the biodiversity of the Sundarbans and have introduced smart patrolling in the forests to combat crime,” said the premier.

She also mentioned that her government has taken initiatives to create alternative employment opportunities for the local people, who are dependent on the Sundarbans for their livelihood, to put an end to “unnecessary logging”.

Hasina handed over three awards at the event: “Bangabandhu Award for Wildlife Conservation,” “National Environment Award” and “Prime Minister’s National Award for Tree Plantation.”

Environment and Forest Minister Anwar Hossain Manju, Deputy Minister Abdullah Al Islam Jakob, and Secretary Istiaque Ahmed also spoke at the event.

Dev projects taken keeping the Sundarbans' importance in mind, she says

Highlighting the importance of the Sundarbans for the country's existence, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said whatever project the government takes it always keeps the mangrove forest in mind so that it does not get affected in any way.

"Whatever project we take, at least we put a special attention to the Sundarbans, so that this forest must not be affected in any way, we've taken all our projects keeping this in our mind," she said.

The prime minister was speaking at the function of World Environment Day, Tree Fair and Campaign for Tree Plantation at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC).

Sheikh Hasina said, “The Sundarbans is not only a heritage for Bangladesh, it is also important for the country's existence...it survives for the Sundarbans".

The prime minister also mentioned that she has given directives to the authorities concerned so that such forests can be expanded to the country's all coastal areas.

She mentioned that her government has taken various steps to preserve the bio-diversity of the Sundarbans and introduced smart patrolling to contain crimes inside it.

"We've taken initiatives to create alternative employment opportunities for the local people who are dependent on the Sundarbans for their livelihood so that unnecessary felling of trees in the Sundarbans comes to an end," Hasina said.

Earlier, the prime minister handed over 'Bangabandhu Award for Wildlife Conservation', 'National Environment Award' and Prime Minister's National Award for Tree Plantation at the programme.

Environment and Forests Minister Anwar Hossain Manju, Deputy Minister Abdullah Al Islam Jakob and Secretary Istiaque Ahmed, among others, spoke on the occasion.

Good move. We need artificial forests in a lot of places not only Sundarbans. But creating and maintaining artificial forests cost a lot I think.

Although the PM is suggesting artificial foresting of the coastal belt, but, it is perhaps to put off criticism against the Rampal power plant project. Rampal being Rampal, but, I welcome this move for the new forest areas.

Good move. We need artificial forests in a lot of places not only Sundarbans. But creating and maintaining artificial forests cost a lot I think.
Just visit Nijhum Deep and coastal belts of South Eastern Bangladesh,your idea will change forever, natural mangrove forests growing out of nowhere, Forest dept just introduced a few species of wildlife, the rest,amazing gift of Almighty.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today alleged that the government has taken many anti-environmental projects just to stay in power.

He also alleged that the government has been taking anti-environment projects one after another for corruption and to protect their interests and destroying the environment.

“This government is a threat to the environment,” he said while addressing a seminar on the occasion of World Environment Day organised by the BNP at Institution of Engineers Bangladesh (IEB) in Dhaka.

BNP’s vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman chaired the seminar and senior journalist Mahfuzullah presented the keynote paper.

Fakhrul said the incumbent government has spoiled the environment and make the country unlivable for the people.

“This government has also destroyed the political atmosphere,” he said.

The BNP leader said all aspects of environment including environment of freedom of expression, political environment is against of common people.

“Government is destroying the environment in a planned way. This government is an obstacle to the environment. To protect the environment there is no alternative of ousting the immoral government.”

Fakhrul said all have to be united and to wage a resistance to protect the environment and have to oust the anti-environment government to save the country.

Khaleda should just step down and allow this man to take over the leadership of BNP.Brainless Khaleda and her thief son is the main reason for BNP's pathetic situation right now.Bangladeshi people don't want to see that Langra Khaleda and Tareq Chura anymore.
