Plot foiled to bomb Americans in Pakistan hotel: Police

LAHORE, Pakistan - Pakistan police claimed Monday to have arrested six suspects, including a would-be suicide bomber, who were plotting to attack a five-star hotel and kill Americans.

Police recovered an explosive-laden suicide vest fitted with 26 hand grenades during the operation in Lahore, the country's second-biggest city, senior police superintendent Zulfikar Hameed told a news conference.

Police in Pakistan, which is under huge U.S. pressure to do more to root out Islamist militants, routinely claim to foil high-profile attacks, most often in Karachi, but rarely release any details of the alleged plots.

It is not possible to confirm the alleged plots independently.

The six suspects were paraded at the news conference wearing black masks to hide their identity.

"Their target was Lahore's Pearl Continental Hotel where some Americans were staying," Hameed said. "They wanted large-scale death and devastation."

"Five terrorists were assigned to explode hand grenades and amid expected panic in the hotel, the suicide bomber was to blow himself up," he said.

Police said the six were trained in Pakistan's northwest tribal district of Khyber on the Afghan border and were captured following a tip-off.

Hameed did not say when and how they were arrested.

Police officer Waris Bhurwana, who was involved in the arrests, said police set up a checkpoint on the main highway from Peshawar in the northwest and intercepted a small Suzuki car outside the eastern city of Lahore last week.

"There were four people in the car, including a would-be suicide bomber," he said, describing the would-be bomber as 15 to 16 years old.

Police recovered four hand grenades, five detonators and a jacket fitted with another 26 hand grenades. Two more suspects carrying hand grenades and following the Suzuki on a motorbike were also arrested, he said.

Police also recovered four kilograms (nine pounds) of hashish, he added.

But officers angrily called a swift end to the news conference after a television reporter snatched away a hood, unmasking one of the suspects.

"If you behave like this we will not invite media in future," one police inspector said.

Six TTP suspects arrested in Lahore

LAHORE: Police arrested six Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan members including a would-be suicide bomber from Shahdara area in Lahore on Monday.
Addressing a press conference in Lahore, SSP Investigation Zulfikar Hameed said that the arrested TTP members were planning to target US nationals who used to stay in a five star hotel in Lahore.

The SSP Investigation revealed that one suicide jacket, 26 hand grenades, four kilograms of drugs and explosives were recovered from the arrested TTP members.
Those arrested include Abdul Baseer alias Qari Waqas resident of Khyber Agency, alleged would-be suicide bomber Mohiuddin alias Saifullah resident of Chitral, Abdur Rehman Ghani resident of District Dir, Skhai Shah and Tehsil Khan both residents of Mohmand Agency and Dilawar Saeed of District Mardan.

But officers angrily called a swift end to the news conference after a television reporter snatched away a hood, unmasking one of the suspects.

There are many reason for putting the hood. One for example is if these people are local and someone recognize them there family can be in great danger. The family of these terrorist or suspect will get hate from public or get threaten even they are innocent.

The media guy was trying to be a hero but i think they should have shot him.

Media guy was irresponsible and showed no respect for the authority of the police. IMO the media guy is no better than the hooded guy in his attitude

If our police force shows up a bit more responsibly to every threat and throws away all the currupt officials in it's department. It can become the most respected and the most feared police force in our region. From 2007 onwards this trend has been encouraged by some political parties to stand against the police even when they know they are wrong coupled with media throwing hate against police they are helpless. I have always beleaved that the extent to how currupt this department is shows in it's inability to tackle some minor problems but there are some really good officers in the department who have really held it together. God bless these men.
