  • The PLA Air Force and Navy Air Force are likely to purchase 700 new stealth fighters, said Edward Hunt, a senior defense consultant at IHS Aerospace, Defense & Security in an article written for the UK-based Jane's Defence Weekly.

The United States alone will purchase 2,616 fifth-generation stealth fighters, including the F-22 and F-35 designed by Lockheed Martin, according to the article. Members of NATO including Great Britain, the Netherlands, Denmark, Italy, Turkey and Canada are planning to purchase a combined 600 F-35 fighters. In the Asia-Pacific region, Japan, South Korea and Australia will purchase an estimated 300 F-35s.

Russia, China and India are expected to acquire more than 1,500 fifth-generation stealth fighters to counter the United States. The fighters are designed to replace their older fourth-generation fighters including the Su-27, Su-30 and Mig-29. To confront any potential threat from F-35s among the US and its allies in the Far East, China is likely to purchase between 200 and 300 of Chengdu Aerospace Corporation's J-20 and 400 of Shenyang Aircraft Corporation's J-31.

With about 700 stealth fighters, China would be capable of dealing with Japanese and South Korean F-35s fighters over the disputed East China Sea. Meanwhile, they can be pitted against Australian's F-35 in the Southern Pacific.

By 2030, more stealth fighters will be introduced into the global market. Japan is likely to purchase the Mitsubishi ATD-X for potential aerial combat against China over the Diaoyutai (Diaoyu or Senkaku) islands.

by which year ?

. .
... J-20 not cheap, 700x need cost very large money.

I don't think we ever go One-on-One....indirectly could be a possibility but that's too will be negligible.

India has nothing to do with "Counter USA".

the figure they gave probably is for a period of atleast 15 years(or may be it gave to total figure before they move to 6th gen),i.e. 2021-2036 @BDforever you can see that even if China makes some 50 jets per year,it'd take some 14 years to fulfill this order.but 50 jets a year is way too much.

as far as i know that giant fighter aircraft manufacturers can easily make 7-8 units per month

.
Still US will be several class higher than all other nations combined including China.Look at their aim 2616 fifth gen jets .Majority of it would be F-35 and the reality is that they are already on that way.Inducted more than 100 F35s and
187 F22 Raptors is already in their service.
But China and Russia is still screwdriving on their designs.
India/Russia FGFA and Chinese J 20s and J31s not gonna ready before 2020.
And within that US will began field their F35c in their ACC and will complete their next generation bomber project.

yup,but only after it full production starts and you've a massive order like F-35.or else, its not economically viable to make a production base so large.production base grows with orders.you can see Lockheed Martin with massive amount of automation and with massive orders, will be able to produce a F-35 per day.but thats only because they've some Three Thousands F-35 to built, not few hundreds.

Wow at 2600+ for usa alone.

these are just F-35s.now count 5th gen UCAVs,which is coming pretty soon.they'll go for these again, possibly few thousands again, because thats the future..

well PLAAF requirement's indicating mass production

not the size we're talking about.but then again, its all debatable.the level of automation, the need and the time frame along with complexity of the platform, everything is depend on it.see, J-10 entered into service 2004(assumed.the fact is they're producing it somewhere from 2002).in 10 years, they made some 260+ J-10,26 aircraft each.and they'll make some 1200.so,it is easily understandable that with all these aircrafts, they'll not shift their most production bases towards fifth gen.its not like the average is not achievable, but economically viable when you've small orders.you can see that India too isn't targeting much LCA per year, want to produce some 16-17 per year, which is pretty decent when you've to induct some 200.same goes for Rafale too.you can only shift massive amount of resouces when you've to make massive numbers.400 just doesn't cut it.

700 J-20s may be feasible. China is fully capable of retooling its production facilities and producing that many fighters on such a scale definitely lowers the per unit cost. Bear in mind that everything China has accomplished so far has been done with a military budget that's 2% of China's GDP (lower, percentage wise, than the US and India) and consistent with China's economic growth. China won't have to waste any forex on these fighters. China's economy only has to grow like it has and the money will keep coming.
