MULTAN: Bringing good news with the start of the new year, Aviation Secretary Muhammad Ali Gardezi has said the fleet of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will be upgraded with the addition of 14 new airplanes before June this year.

He was speaking at a ceremony held to mark the launch of direct flights from Multan to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Friday. The airline will operate two direct flights in a week from Multan – one from Multan-Jeddah every Friday and the other from Multan-Madina every Saturday.

Four new planes have already arrived while five others, which have been approved by the government, will reach this month. The remaining five will be delivered to PIA by June this year.

Elaborating, Gardezi, who is also the chairman of PIA, said four airplanes had been taken on lease and three more would be acquired on lease of six years.

He pointed out that the major reason behind the losses suffered by the air carrier was the use of airplanes on wrong routes. Before the current management took over, he said, big planes were used on small routes and small planes operated on big routes.

“At present, PIA is earning Rs8 billion a month and our target is Rs15 billion,” he claimed.

Despite losses and high fuel prices, he said, PIA had expanded its network all across the world. “We have started four flights a week to Toronto (Canada) and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). More international routes will be introduced.”

Talking about challenges, Gardezi said the biggest challenge the carrier faced was higher fuel prices. “We are paying 56% of our total revenues to cover fuel expenses and only 18% goes for payment of salaries to the employees.”

Discussing the start of flights from Multan to Saudi Arabia, he said a longstanding demand had been met of the residents of Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan and adjoining areas. With the completion of a new terminal at the Multan Airport, PIA will operate more international flights from there.

He stressed that the PIA management was making efforts to make the carrier a profitable entity by notching up revenues and reducing costs without compromising on service standards.

PIA will never be privatized as it fly Pakistani politicians and their families free of cost and extend them VVIP status.

PIA earns to feed politicians and corrupt mafia. 99% hiring in PIA, are done on political basis.

The problems is not with aircraft, it's the Management which is the problem.

PIA was literally done as an institution starting from the 80s when MQM took over Karachi. Bathakhori and Safarshi is their culture in workplace. This is now being followed by PPP.

Another reason why PIA is in loss is due to aging fleet and shortage of fleet. How can you gain revenue when you spend Billions on fuel and spare parts and the only few modern Boeing 777s you have are being used on domestic and Middle East routes.

I see good news coming in. Besides, getting newer aircrafts which will be fuel efficient and having the capacity to be used on more routes,, PIA will ultimately end up selling up to 26% shares by the end of 2014 and this comes due to the condition of the IMF.

There are rumors Government will shift base to Islamabad as the new Airport is about to get completed. The PIA chairman also indicated that in some program. If that happens you can bet success.

PIA was a loss making organization in 1999 but according to the financial report of 2004 it was a profit making organization.

rest you can find here:
PIA - Corporate Reports

Non of the political party took notice, despite regular news and scandals being brought on media.

PIA is has all sort of ailments, it has most number of employee / air-craft ratio.

Our officials have habit to fly without any justification, this is why no one would dare to fix PIA.

Our other civil institutions are far less efficient, but since they are not required to generate profit, they are not pointed out.
Judiciary being the most corrupt and loss making institution of Pakistan's hisotry.... during Zardari era.

14 new planes is a good number , however 20 Planes would be good target figure but good new never the less

Thats good news...the aging fleet sucks big time, but they need to improve on their customer service too

earlier when i was a kid and traveled on PIA they gave me coloring books, pencils etc...which i loved...thats what you call service (this was just something I witnessed) and it's not seen any more!!!...its not only coloring books that matter, they should improve it as an overall and bounce it back into business

here's a pic :

they should get some A380's or 747-8I's as they scrapped a few jumbo jet's so a replacement with a jumbo should be on paper

I posted some pics in the civil aviation thread here's a link: (post no. 344)
