Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and Etihad Airways has recently re-launched codeshare partnership to access un-serviced markets and provide customers with clearer routing. The arrangement will provide customers with access to both airlines’ trunk routes between the UAE and Pakistan, and on Etihad services across its global network. The partnership would see Etihad Airways place its ‘EY’ code on PIA services to and from Abu Dhabi to Lahore, Islamabad and Peshawar. PIA would place its ‘PK’ code on Etihad services from Karachi, Islamabad and Lahore to Abu Dhabi and vice versa, and also onwards from the UAE capital to Amsterdam, Bahrain, Colombo Chicago, Frankfurt, Los Angeles, Madrid, Moscow, Washington DC, and Zurich. This will be a great opportunity for PIA to join hands with Etihad Airways, the national carrier of the emirate of Abu Dhabi, connecting Pakistan to UAE and around the globe, expanding reach to more destinations for the convenience of passengers.

The relationship between Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates has always been a strong one as both countries share historical, commercial and cultural links and this partnership with PIA is a natural progression for both carriers. In future, PIA’s services would be expanded to Amman, Athens, Brisbane, Melbourne, Nairobi, Rome and Sydney. Etihad Airways has been serving Pakistan since November

Pakistan International Airline CEO Air marshal Arshad Malik is restrained by The Sindh High Court from carrying out any function as the chief executive officer of Pakistan International Airlines till Jan 22 on a petition challenging his appointment. A former PIA employee Safdar Anjum, who is notorious for filing such lawsuits has submitted that he was filing the petition in the public interest. Safdar is also general secretary of one of the associations of PIA senior staff/employee and asked the court to declare the appointment illegal and unconstitutional.

The bench in its order said that the contentions raised by the petitioner’s lawyer merited consideration, particularly the apparent titanic gulf between the CEO’s education, qualification and experience and the job requirement. It is important to note that Safdar also sought a restraining order against the incumbent CEO on the ground that he was making huge financial decisions and might encumber valuable assets of the PIA that may result in the selling of these assets at throwaway prices.

A court issued notices to respondents as well as the deputy attorney general for Jan 22. The court also said that the PIA chief, chief human resource officer and the airline’s board of directors, through its chairman/CEO, were restrained from carrying out any function as well as encumbering or disposing of assets of the national flag carrier valued over Rs10 million.

The lawyer for the petitioner argued before the bench that as evident from his job application, the main respondent was holding a basic BSc degree and seemed to have acquired qualifications in war studies.

He said clearly he lacked any qualifications, experience in the commercial airline industry or operating a commercial fleet under the civil aviation rules and international treaties.

Referring to a previous judgement of the apex court, the petitioner’s lawyer submitted that under similar circumstances, the Supreme Court had removed the then CEO of PIA while holding that “until and unless strict compliance with the provisions of the statute and rules governing appointment to these senior positions were adhered to in letter and spirit, such appointment will always be subject to challenge on the ground of arbitrariness and non-compliance with the law and settled principles”.

I think military has decided to run PIA. Which is a good thing. Fauji Foundation, Fauji Trust, DHA all run properly and well. It will take time to crush these leeches and criminals.
One thing I will say tho...I fly business class to Pakistan and no way on earth will I pay Etihad rate and then sit in a PIA product from Abu Dhabi to Pakistan.

Problem with PIA is the same paindoo production awaam bhati-fied by sifarish and rishwat.

Story of PIA is the story of Pakistani muashra. How it all took a nose dive post 70s after F.M Ayub Khan, when Bhutto the terrible took control. The generation that built Pakistan, the generation that gave hope to the Pakistani dream was crushed or forced to migrate(brain drain) under this terrible man. Then the game of thrones between Nooras and Bhuttos lasted for almost 2/3 decades with a few marshall laws in between. The forst generation of Pakistanis hence gave way to second gen Pakistanis who only had option to survive under growing politicisation, cronyism etc.

One irrepairable damage Bhutto did apart from numerous fiascos(Op Gibraltar in 65 and 71 Mukti Bahini inaurgency) was he singlehandedly ruined Pakistani education system. Lekin aj bhi Bhutto zinda hai.
