KARACHI: Two aircraft of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) acquired through the wet lease program arrived in Karachi on Tuesday.

Both aircraft have been acquired through Turkish Airlines and the agreement entails the use of aircraft as well as provision of pilots and cabin crew, along with maintenance and insurance facilities. This is in contrast with the dry lease program in which only aircraft are provided.

Turkey had agreed to provide four Boeing 737-800 (180-seater) aircraft to the PIA under the program with the management of the national flag carrier aiming at a turnaround through acquisition of planes on dry and wet leases.

Turkish Airline will provide Pakistan with all four aircraft by the end of this year.

A spokesperson for Managing Director PIA Shahnawaz Rehman said the 737-800 (180-seater) aircraft are fuel efficient, adding that the planes would be assigned both domestic and international routes.

The spokesperson added that the induction of these planes in the fleet would help increase overall revenues.

The arrival of the two aircraft comes days after Pakistan’s privatisation czar Mohammad Zubair told Reuters in an interview that Pakistan was planning to split PIA into two companies and sell control of the core business to a global airline over the next 18 months.

The cash-strapped airline has some 17,000 employees but just 36 aircraft — and 10 of them are grounded due to a lack of spare parts.

Last 15 years really took a toll on PIA. Musharaf and Zardari regime have completely destroyed this institution along with many others. But again, there is hope as all the government institutions are showing progress, be it Pakistan steel mill or PIA or Pak railway.

Turkey.. well but from which airline company??

Pegasus? OnurAir?

Turkish Airlines? Maybe it's a preparation for Airbus A350.

do you know what wet lease mean?

it means PIA will literally do nothing....this is a disgrace to huge manpower and engnr setup of PIA...PML N policies are coming out to be crazier than PPPP. they will simply do face saving by projects from income of privitization and giving a tremendous return to chinese investors...

Anything to get the economy going. Doing nothing is not an option any more. We are totally fixed and nobody is interested in investing in Pakistan. If Chinese are demanding high returns, then get someone else; can you do that?

It will take a lot more than two airplanes on wet lease to get the economy going, Sir.

Sir, do you really think that I was making a case for 2 aircrafts for economic turn around? My comment was in larger context and in reply to @ziaulislam.

I realize that, and I was actually reinforcing the broader context you meant.

l have no objection to getting airplans on lease, this is the standarad practice all around the world and very good move..but what is the catch?, it is WET LEASE, which means that the pilots, staff, engineers and everything else will be not of PIA, its simply just coloring a plane and its staff as PIA, meaning its very very expensive as compared to standard dry lease and will not help PIA at all...

this is basically joke/ paint job and with sole purpose of huge kick backs..

basically the current government started very well but is now completely confused with economical polices.
