Why does F-16 have more range? Is that because of more fuel capacity or more efficient engine?

Much more powerful and efficient engine i.e. both PW F100-PW-229 (IPE) and GE F110-GE-129(IPE) are 29000+(lbs) class power plants and provide very good fuel efficiency with high performance.

Americans are the best when it comes to fighter engine technology. The F-35A's single engine delivers more than 40000(lbs) full afterburning thrust.

Pakistan is exempt from Chinese bans because of our special relationship with China. It is only the cost and production capacity which is delaying the export to us.
No wishful thinking of yours, J-31 has most probable stealth jets of Pakistan in near future @khansaheeb :disagree:

In my humble opinion , PAF need Su-35 Flankers or its Chinese J15 /16 version . At least 2 squadrons ! It can supplement available F-16s and Thunders ! After Flankers we need to lay hand on J-31 ! J-10 only fits in equation if PAF decides to do away with advance version of JF-17 due to its cost !

no its way more advance than upcoming BLK-3 better payloads, better range, better avionics, better all around jet as compare to JF-17 @Khurram2349

Why does F-16 have more range? Is that because of more fuel capacity or more efficient engine?

F-16 internal fuel capacity ~7000 lbs plus another 300 gal x1 and 370 gallon x2

Engine consumption, etc makes a diff , fuel fraction of greater then .25 is considered a good indicator

Jf fuel fraction is 5130lbs / 20062 lbs almost .26

Not sure about j-10 ?

We have been discussing fuel capacity of the F/A-18 Hornet (or its lack of) and I thought I would throw out some figures for jets in service. Fuel Fraction is a figure calculated to express the internal fuel as a fraction of aircraft weight (assuming a clean configuration). As a rule of thumb for modern fighters with afterburners a fraction of 0.25 is considered a minimum. Less than that it will not hhave enough legs for dog fighting or even spending a meaningfull time on station.

Super Hornet F/A-18E 0.31

F/A-18C Hornet I could not find a site with the data but have heard its as low as 0.22

F/A-22A Raptor 0.45

F-14D Tomcat 0.26

Boeing F-15C Eagle 0.30

F-16C Fighting Falcon 0.26

JAS 39A Gripen 0.26

MiG-29M Fulcrum 0.27

MiG-31 Foxhound 0.40

Su-30 Flanker 0.29

Dassault Rafale M 0.31

EF2000 Typhoon 0.29

Chengdu F-7MG 0.27

AV-8B Harrier II 0.32

Most of this was taken from: www.airtoaircombat.com...

COMBAT RADIUS AND PERSISTENCE. General Dynamics chose a single turbofan engine, essentially the same engine as one of the two that powered the F-15. Use of a single engine helped minimize weight and drag; use of a turbofan rather than a pure jet engine gave high fuel efficiency. Additionally, the YF-16 designers used a "blended body" design in which the wing gradually thickened at the root and blended into the body contours without the usual visible joint. The space thus created was filled with fuel. With such a high fuel fraction and a fuel-efficient engine, the YF-16 was able to break the presumption that small aircraft were necessarily short-ranged.

CFTs are a factor too.

They certainly are. But even without them, the Block-50 (GE Powered) and the Block-52(PW Powered) have a better range than JF-17 and J-10 on max internal fuel, even though they have much more thrust.

Even the older PAF Block-15s, which have been MLU-ed, offer 23,830 lbs thrust with their PW F100-PW-200/220E power plants. Being lighter than the Block-50s/52s, even they offer better range on max internal fuel than JF-17 & J-10.

The rest of the world still have a ways to go before they can catch up with the US in fighter plane engine technology.

What is the difference between J-20 and J-31 In term of range, tech and roles

Thanks for the A2A. The J-20 is a heavy air-superiority stealth interceptor similar to the F-22A, but with a longer combat range(~1,800 km vs F-22A’s 760km combat radius) and probably heavier weapons payload(~11 tons) base on max takeoff weight of 32 metric tons. The J-20 encapsulates the latest cutting edge techonology and is not for export, with an estimated cost of around US$140 million per aircraft.

On the other hand, the SAC FC-31 is a medium multiRole stealth platform. From AVIC specs, the FC-31 has a maximum takeoff weight of 25 metric tons, combat range of 1,200 km and a top speed of Mach 1.8. It can carry 8 metric tons of weapons and could perform the role of naval aircraft carrier, strike or inteceptor role. Like the F-35, it is the only other fifth-gen stealth fighter available in today’s aviation export market, with a price range half of the F-35, at US$70 million.

An FC-31 model is currently on display at the Paris Air Show 2017. The FC-31 features high survivability, a low radar signature, supreme electronic countermeasures, strong information capacity, outstanding situation awareness and beyond-visual-range combat capability, putting an end to the United States’s monopoly on fifth-gen fighter jet market.

Nobody beside the manufacturers & PLA knows for sure what they’re designed for, but there’re some reasonable speculations out there.

It’s believed that J-20 is China’s attempt at building a F-22 (an air-superiority fighter) equivalent. But that’s not entirely true, as photos J-20 carrying PL-15 long-range AAM seems to indicate a rather important interceptor role. However neither is it a pure interceptor like MiG-31 (or its proposed replacement), as its aerodynamic configuration seems to suggest a fair degree of maneuverability. In short, J-20 is probably the closest thing to a stealth F-14 (but without carrier ops capability): a compromise between air-superiority fighter and interceptor.

FC-31 (J-31) does no have a direct Western equivalent. While F-35 can carry prestigious amount of internal fuel and half-decent internal A2G payload, FC-31 probably lacks such capability. This is because the largely defensive PLA does not accord offensive A2G capability such high priority. FC-31 is probably limited to defensive counter-air ops when in “stealth” (internal fuel, internal weapons) mode. To do anything else, it may have to carry drop tanks and external weapons, making it comparable to some 4.5th generation fighters. It’s also speculated that FC-31 may have carrier ops potential.

The J-20 appears to be designed to be stealthy from the front, carry a large payload and plenty of fuel. The consensus currently tends to be that it is a long range high value target stealth interceptor capable of high Mach nunbers. Meaning in a hypothetical war between the US & China it would go after the tankers and AWACS with deep strike being a secondary role and potentially a communication node to other assets. The real purpose behind China's mysterious J-20 combat jet. This article does a decent job explaining it I think.

The J/FC-31 appears to be a multi-role stealth fighter with emphasis on penetration missions such as going behind enemy lines to Target ammunition/fuel depots (the J-20 would go after higher value target like airbases) and to some extent dogfight from BVR or the far end of WVR and it should have plenty of networking built in as well. Hope this helps give you an idea until someone who knows much more provids more detail.

The J-20 is already in production and seems to be a counter to the USA’s F/A-18C/D Super-Hornet and F-35A/C Joint Strike Fighter While the J-31 appears to be a direct counter to the USAF F-22A Raptor; even in it’s resemblance to the Raptor. Both are multi-role fighters and both are stealthy but the J-31 is the one most optimized to be stealthy.

Hi,

Way more advanced engineering than anyone else---. And advanced engineering also results in better fuel mileage.

F-16 has higher fuel faction then J-10. This is the only regret I have for the J-10, back in it's conception it was designed for front line air superiority and interception against Soviet threat, optimized for speed and maneuverability, not so much for range. Now whenever we want to use J-10 for lengthy mission like SCS patrol run we'd see three honking EFTs under her...
I just wish they'd put CFT on J-10, I don't care if top speed drops to M1.8.

Aside from fuel fraction, F-16's wing also has higher L/D for subsonic cruise as well.
