well, people living in a 'democracy' should be allow to protest without being called 'traitors or of Chinese origins' etc. Having visited the Philippines, i will say the main problem the Philippine faces is mostly within in the form of corruption/incompetency/irresponsibility of the government. If you look at south Korea(which is good example for the Philippine) they were more poorer than the Philippine just a few decades ago in the 50s and 60s, and even militarily they were weaker than the Philippines, but look at where they are today. Both countries have been opened to world trade and had american support, but the difference is clear to see today. Now even Vietnam with a smaller GDP than the Philippine spends more on its defence/military and has a better equipped army. The Philippine has the weakest/most poor equipped army in Asia at the moment, and the situation wont change anytime soon. Philippines government should know that the US looks at china as an important trade partner. That is an interest the US view as more important than waging war against china for the sake of some islands and rocks in uninhabitable part of an ocean. The US(or any sensible country in the world for that matter) has no permanent friend only permanent interests. The U.S is even bickering about openly taking sides to defend Japan if push comes to shove in their disputes with China, so how can it take sides on a disputed island of an even less important country like the Philippines in which it has little or no interest? The government there should know that no country will come to their aid. Also Taiwan has claims/dispute with the Philippines aims with the and i understand 1 of their fishermen was killed recently which caused quite a stir. so in a situation in which there is a skirmish with Taiwan will the U.S also intervene for the Philippine against Taiwan in which it has more interest?
The Philippine has to know that self reliance is the only way forward, That's why countries like Vietnam, Japan, South Korea,Malaysia, Indonesia are all trying to localize their defence production(even though they have american 'support'/troops), instead of begging for help from outside powers. They know that creating a local defence industry provides jobs,has spin offs effects on other industrial sectors/manufacturing, avoids threat of sanctions, and helps the country acquire skills/knowledge which can also have spin offs on other sectors of the economy. The Philippine should follow these countries example. Asking the U.S to come set up bases without a proper consideration/plan to boost the country defence industry/production will just lead to even more corruption/reliance on foreign help, which will be(as it is already now) detrimental to the country as a whole. Its really sad to see Philippine which is the most christian nation in Asia(yet among the poorest) having incompetent and corrupt leaders who don't give a shit about the country. I know many Filipinos here in the U.K, and they are very nice, hard working, easy going and cheerful people which i have a very high esteem for. its a shame the government is so irresponsible, had it not been the case i'm sure the country would have been a power house in ASEAN. Hopefully the situation will change in future when the youthful next generation takes over.
