Philippine Coal Importers Say Can Buy Coal Elsewhere After Indonesian Halt

Manila. Philippine coal users can import coal from other countries including Australia, South Africa and Russia and source more locally if shipments from top supplier Indonesia are halted, company officials said on Thursday.

Two Indonesian coal ports have blocked ships from leaving to the Philippines due to safety concerns following a spate of ship hijackings in southern Philippines by the infamous Abu Sayyaf terror group. The Indonesian Coal Mining Association expects more areas to suspend coal shipments to the Philippines.

"So far we are not aware of any stopped shipments" from Indonesia, Luis Miguel Aboitiz, chief operating officer of Aboitiz Power Corp. "We can get coal from Australia or South Africa but at higher cost," he told Reuters.

The Philippines imports 15 million tonnes of coal a year mainly for power plants, 70 percent of which is sourced fromIndonesia.

Due to the recent incident of kidnapping in Sabah... Malaysia decided to take serious action and close down the border between Sabah and Philippines. However this is causing some effect to Philippines especially Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi as prices of rice in Sulu rose 100% while petrol 70% and threatening the food security in the area.

Reports said the price of half a sack of rice had sore up to between P1,000 and P1,200, doubling its previous price, because of the blockade.

People in Tawi-Tawi also buy diesel, gasoline, kerosene and mechanical lubricants from Sabah, which are more than 20 percent cheaper than what residents of mainland Mindanao buy from outlets of big players in the national petroleum industry. "If this closure of the Philippine-Sabah sea routes will continue in the next three months, people in Tawi-Tawi will experience what people in drought-stricken areas in Mindanao are now suffering from."

Communities in Sulu and Tawi-Tawi already feel the brunt of the blockade with the spike in food and petroleum prices already 70% to date, threatening food security in the area, the women’s group said. This has deep economic and social repercussions to the already strained condition in Mindanao brought about by the drought and the energy crisis.
