Per capita income to be $12,000 by 2041: PM

Bangladesh's per capita income would be around US$ 12,000 by 2041 when the size of the economy would be 2.5 trillion dollars, reports BSS.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said this in parliament today in a written reply to a question from treasury bench member Didarul Alam (Chittagong-4).

The scripted answers of the Prime Minister were put on the table as the session, chaired by Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, went on with debate on next year's proposed budget placed by the finance minister on June 1 last.

Sheikh Hasina said four private economic zones were given final licenses to set up industries while ten others were given pre-qualification licenses.

The Prime Minister said the Kaliakoir Hi-tech Park is being constructed with a target to arrange employment for one million people in IT sector by 2021.

Bangladesh would be the centre point of the economy of Asia region by 2041 and play a remarkable role in local supply chain and global value chain as well as establishing regional sub-regional communication and connectivity, the Prime Minister said.

She hoped that the open economic policy of the present government would open up a new era of success through creating a win-win situation in the areas of trade, commerce and investment at regional, sub-regional and international level.

Referring to the projection of some global research organisations, the Premier said Bangladesh would be the world's 29th largest economy by 2030 and 23rd by 2050 from the present 31st.

She can certainly predict the momentum of the economy at least for the next 10-15 years. Its no biggie.

2041, is too far to predict what happens, if the world economy crashes , service and textile economics like Bangladesh and India will be the first to hit, while India has proven its domestic markets are enough to recover from recursions , Bangladesh hasn't, maybe it can but we wont know right now.

Instead of daydreaming about 2041 she and her govt should focus on 2017-18. First increase per capita to 2000 before thinking about 12000. They have this stupid goal of increasing per capita income to 4000 by 2021 which is just a fantasy. And now she's talking about 2041 and 12000.

It is very important to have a roadmap to actually graduate to upper income country otherwise we may get stcuk in middle income trap like many asian countries.
We increase our per capita 3 fold in last 10 years, so it is very much in our reach to at least have 3000 per capita by 2021. We will have a rebase due in the meantime. So very much possible.

It is actually a job well done if we can reach 3000 by 2021. But I think we'd end up somewhere around 2200-2500 in 2021 and 5000-6000 in 2030. Which would not be bad by any standard. And actually if everything goes well then 12000 is achievable by 2041. But with inflation 12000 in 2041 would be much less of value than 12000 now. I don't think 12000 per capita income would make us a developed country in 2041. It would probably make us upper middle income.
