Cultural and economic revival of rural China is vital in protecting traditional Chinese culture.

Hanfu movements are gaining popularity in some parts of China. Fuelled by a wave of young people with a passion in preserving traditional culture and finding an opportunity to dress up and the guidance of elders.

5th Hanfu culture week in Xifu

In Shanghai

In Beijing

Shenzhen

Henan (Zhengzhou) man talks about the meaning of Hanfu. @18:25 "唤醒自己的族人,我们是一个民族...一个群体失去了自己公认的基础东西,这个群体肯定是灭亡...我希望我们民族从新振作起来"

Traditional Chinese clothing is too ambiguous. It should be dynasty based. Such as the Beijing pic is from Ming dynasty. Not Han. Chinese cloth changed through time. So the term " traditional Chinese fashion" per se does not describe Chinese historical fashion.

You are right. The point of this movement however is to restore traditional Chinese culture. Clothing is mere symbolism (serves a psychological purpose) and a starting point, thus dynastic differentiation isn't as important, all will be celebrated. It may not be Han dynasty but it is the clothing of Han people. The point is not to wear traditional clothes everyday but to continue the civilisation on a firm ancient foundation. There are also many designers working on modernising old styles and incorporating ancient elements into modern designs whether its clothing or architecture.

China does not need to be too concern about lack of understanding with its past. Not with its solid foundation. It does need to integrate modern achievements into that goundation.

I think China does need to be concerned with such matters, not to relive the past or dwell on it but for very practical reasons going into the future, product differentiation is one of them.

For example China is increasingly pushing for its cultural industry for domestic consumption and eventually export. This covers tourism, fashion, education, consumer products, architecture, entertainment and others. The outlandish fashion pieces you see on fashion event catwalks and concept cars in car shows often times are not meant to be a final product but a reference piece for a more toned down consumer product. Same is with promoting traditional culture, it is a reference point (that reference point must have value) for producing modern skews of cultural products in the listed areas. This will become an industry that will create jobs, increase value creation (earn a premium, much of which is currently earned by the West), aid in China's industrial upgrade, in addition to other inherent social values. Without promoting traditional foundations, China cannot fully complete the high end industrial and economic upgrade. Earning that premium is necessary for supporting high end and niche consumer industries.

This is not for today but for decades down the road.
