Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) Thursday issued show cause notices to nearly 30 television channels for airing false news about a blast in Lahore’s Gulberg neighborhood.

The channels reported the ‘breaking news’ between 1:00pm-2:00pm creating panic and fear among the public, the regulator said.

It has asked the erring channels to explain why they not be fined up to Rs1 million each or their licenses not be suspended/cancelled.

The channels that aired the false news were Geo, Khyber News, 92 News, Dunya, Samaa, Metro 1, ARY, Awaz, Jaag, Abb Takk, Roze, DawnNews, Mehran, Kohinoor, 7 News, Lahore News, Neo, Capital, Sach, Sindh TV, Express News, Channel 5, Din, Waqt, KTN, NewsOne, Channel 24, BOL, and K-21.

Pak needs strict regulations in all departments. This false news spread like wild fire! Sooner or later the western news outlets start to claim this as credible news from Pakistani sources. All it does brings panic to residents and puts more spot light on Pakistans security.

I sense it was a terrorist activity, but Nawaz League is so freaking scared of army operation in Lahore (and Punjab) that even a blast is forcefully demanded to be reported as a gas-cylinder blast.

Punjab government (and noon league) know consequences of Ranger operation in their domain. Like Altaf Hussain, they too will go "khassi" if Army started operating in their areas.

LOL reality of the foreignfunded media these ghaddar journalists' are foreign tools making money writing op-eds and reports in foreign newspapers like Mohammad Haneef, Mubashir Zaidi [in The Hindu] and many others. These jerks are'nt in state control and supported by foreign hands. This is the lot of Najam Sethi if local govt. take action, in 98 Nwaz Sharif took action against him, the US mission jumped in to save Sethi calling him 'he's our man'.Pakistan needs to treat these foreign hands that are using these puppets.

Sir it was explosive material baki ap ko pata hain key chup chup mitti pawo PSL air izzat is mamla hain. Punjab got caught with her trousers down.

When a terrorist blast happens, terrorists claim it. Why wouldn't they? It's their hard work.

Who has claimed this cylinder blast?

Because it was an "accidental discharge" their real target was something else. Something due to happen next month maybe? Just saying.

No one likes to take credit for blunders and don't you all find it suspicious how CTD officials were asked to take back their statement regarding their information provided to a leading media house ?

The thing here is Punjab Gov is on damage limitation mode, the last thing prosperous Punjab wants is a Panic and lack of investor confidence for PSL and all those lucrative business deals.

All that article says is that a LUMS professor said the govt shouldn't pass off a bomb blast as cylinder blast. I want to know who this LUMS professor is and what is his source of confirmation that it was indeed a bomb blast.

Look, i am no fan of punjab govt and I simply HATE Rana Sanaullah. But in this case, I think the people should stop looking for something that has no definitive proof as of yet. I am aware that our awaam loves having a serving of conspiracy theories with their evening tea. But in cases of terrorism at least, I hope they would restrain themselves.

CTD confirmed it was explosive material. Then why the hush?! Answer me that question first? Also I'm not in the business of indulging in conspiracy stories.
