After the recent turbulence over the MMRCA, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has signalled the possibility of a separate single engine fighter jet platform replacing India’s MiG-21s in the event that the LCA Tejas is not up to the task. In a comment (as part of an interview) that has dumbfounded observers still digesting the implications of the MMRCA’s purported demise and the hard-nosed decision to purchase 36 flyaway Rafales directly from Dassault Aviation’s French facility, aviation circles are aflutter with precisely what the Minister meant.

With no complete clarity on the full numbers of Rafales India intends to operate, the possibility of yet another fighter type being added to the inventory (albeit replacing the legacy MiG-21 and the enormous nationwide infrastructure available for its upkeep) is intriguing to say the least. For one thing, it casts questions over the government’s own confidence in the much derided LCA Tejas platform, an aircraft currently in its home stretch and expected to power into squadron service in the visible future.

On the other hand, the suggestion that the LCA isn’t up to the job and might need to be replaced by another aircraft for acquisition in high numbers could spark bemusement, if not interest, in firms like Lockheed-Martin and Saab for the F-16 and Gripen, the only two platforms in the M-MRCA that were powered by single engines. This could be an interesting space to watch

what exactly is wrong with the Tejas?? is it the hardware or the ineptitude of HAL to manage the project?

Tejas Mk II would be a good option. I think we should go full steam ahead to get this one operational as soon as possible.

Ordering 100 tejas and 100 Mini MMRCA will be a good deal too. As Mig27 needs replacement in few um years time . So why not ?

Tejas will replace Mig21 not Mig 27 . So tejas will achieve for what it is made for .

Tejas Mk II would be a good option. I think we should go full steam ahead to get this one operational as soon as possible.
But as per our new plan MK2 will be very different aircraft from MK1 . What it is ? No one knows but major changes expected than previous MK2 specs .So it will enter service only by 2022 or so . As work has to start from scratch . As per later reports

Am hoping MK2 will have Stealth features, 3D/2D Nozzle with more range and load .

It's a good deal if you want to make a aerospace zoo. I dont even know why on earth tejas wouldnt be good enough for the lowest tier of IAF, makes no sense.

Now the problem is G NG is 69 million per pop(Wikipedia) If that the thing why why done we go for Advanced version of S35 or Migs ?

Delays and the inability of recognizing that India is India - a developing country - not Germany, France or Japan that had the technical base required for as ambitious a project as building an aircraft from scratch !

The Modi gov do not trust LCA as its made in India. Modi is all talk about made in India but he would throw India's only jet that took 33 years to develop under the bus.

Nice ! But how do you know we will have more rafale ? Problem starts from there and Ends with MK2

Pass a law, which legalizes 10% commission in any defense contract. All your procurement issues will be resolved.
Don't get me wrong, its the only issue behind daily contradictory statements and delays.
