The shortcomings of indigenous Light Combat Aircraft Tejas Mark-I, like its survivability, performance and maintainability issues, have been addressed in its Mark-II version, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar informed Lok Sabha on Friday. The minister’s statement on the technical shortcomings in the LCA project came at a time when he was talking of making the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) the backbone of Indian Air Force.

The minister listed absence of internal jammers affecting survivability, aircraft performance shortfalls and maintainability as concerns in the Tejas Mark-I.

Parrikar also added that the maintainability issues were raised by IAF late in 2009 when design and drawings were already frozen for Mark-I. “However, many safety critical maintenance issues are already addressed in Mark-II,” he said. The government had sanctioned project for development of LCA Mark-II in 2009.

The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) is the prime agency for development of LCA Mark-II with public and private partnerships. “All the above mentioned shortcomings in LCA Mark-I have been addressed in LCA Mark-II version,” Parrikar said.

develop mk2 or not that is not important, but develop an indigenous aircraft engine to power India built fighters.

This program makes Indians look stupid. I know people would jump on me for this comment but it's a sad truth.

The LCA program created an ecosystem and base.

LCA has faced delays, I agree, but sanctions palyed their part and the fact that we jumped from a 2nd Gen fighetr to a 4th Gen one did not help either.

But It will be inducted, Mk II and Mk III versions will be mcuh better and AMCA will benefit from the above mentioned ecosystem and base.

Remember F 16 did have shortcomings too but US did not reject it.

Instead its developers ironed out its issues and USAF inducted it.

Today its one of the most successful fighters.

Saame happned with F 14 Tomcat (its TWR was only 0.58 in early versions) and Su 27 (T 10).

This program makes Indians look stupid, Because Most of the difficulties this program is facing are regularly being discussed at every level.

But Tejas Program can unabashedly claim of being the most critically discussed program of a developing country with a lot of handicaps, which is trying to produce a good Jet Fighter.

Yes and they will be successfully doing it for next 30 years
who cares how much time it takes point is to make an home grown aerospace industry and LCA programme is very sucsessful for that part as for threat to indian air space we already are making arrangements for that what pakistanies dont want to understand is that LCA will always be a homeland defnce / point defnce fighter and a gap filler and sooner than later we are already very close to owr goals then why should we open owr roza few minutes before iftaari :azn:

Rather than investing couple of millions over a decade and keeping the program dangling between success and failure, why not invest some $1bn and make sure that it reaches it goal in a few years with full certainity?
