A man was questioned this Monday, 9 February, in flagrante delicto in Paris, while he painted the word "Jew" on vehicles parked on a public venue, in the 16th district of the capital. According to the Metronews daily, he tagged about twenty cars... to change apartments.
The cops placed the 73-year-old suspect in custody. He was already known to the police, not for having perpetrated a crime but for filing a complaint as a victim.
Last summer, the man had twice visited the police station of the 16th district to denounce anti-semitic statements. The suspect and his wife, both of Jewish faith, supposedly found swastikas on their mailbox, on their stairs, and on the door to their residence, situated in a building of Ville de Paris. In August, they filed a complaint to denounce these deeds.
In December 2014, new inscriptions were supposedly found inside the building. « Dirty Jew », a swastika, and some other tags were allegedly seen on the building's walls at the end of 2014 as well as in January 2015.
The police started to have doubt at that moment. « Many people were questioned and some tests with the inscriptions were made... It was then that cops felt there was something really bizarre in this story», revealed to the Metronews daily a source close to the report. In effect, comparing inscriptions, investigators found that the the complainant's handwriting was oddly similar to that found on the walls and on the mailbox of the building.
The suspect's motivations are muddled. « The couple wanted to change apartments. We don't know why because he lived along with his wife in a 59 m2 flat. He had made two requests alongside the landlord that were refused. This was perhaps a strategy to succeed in their endeavor», speculated the source, adding that the husband and his wife had for many times visited a psychiatric hospital.
