Parents of murdered US journalist Daniel Pearl appeal acquittals

May 02, 2020

ISLAMABAD: The parents of murdered US journalist Daniel Pearl filed an appeal with Pakistan’s Supreme Court Saturday to reverse a decision overturning the longstanding convictions of four men in the case.

A Karachi court sparked outrage last month when it acquitted British-born militant Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh and three other men convicted in Pearl’s 2002 kidnapping and beheading.

“We have filed an appeal of this decision to the Pakistan Supreme Court,” Pearl’s father, Judea Pearl, said in a video message.

“We are standing up for justice not only for our son but for all our dear friends in Pakistan so they can live in a society free of violence and terror and raise their children in peace and harmony.”

The appeal doubles up on a petition prosecutors already filed with the court.

Following the acquittals, authorities re-arrested Sheikh and the others, who will be held for at least three months while the appeals play out.

Pearl’s killing provoked international condemnation, pressuring Pakistan’s military government just as it was remaking its image following years of backing the Taliban in neighboring Afghanistan.

Faisal Siddiqui, the lawyer representing Pearl’s parents, told AFP there is “substantial incriminating evidence, both oral and forensic, against the accused persons for the offenses they have been tried for.”

The “Sindh High Court has misapplied the burden and the standard of proof erroneously to the facts of this case,” their appeal states.

Tariq Bilal, a senior Pakistani lawyer, said the court would take up both appeals simultaneously.

The “filing of the appeal by parents alongside the state would carry greater weight for the court as both parties have questioned the acquittal,” Bilal said.

Pearl was South Asia bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal when he was abducted in Karachi in January 2002 while researching a story about Islamist militants.

A graphic video showing his decapitation was delivered to the US consulate nearly a month later.

Observers at the time said the killers were acting out of revenge for Pakistan’s support of the US-led war on the hard-line Taliban regime in Afghanistan and the Al-Qaeda terror network they harbored.

In a statement supporting the appeal, the Committee to Protect Journalists said releasing the four men in the case “would only add to the threats facing journalists in Pakistan and deepen Pakistan’s reputation as a haven for terrorists.”

there is serious question mark on judicial system .

Doesn't help Pakistan's international reputation here ...

LOL at reputation. We are only going to look at our best interest.

We know how nations are judged by the Western jury. India which rapes, lynches and kills its Muslim population is touted by the West as the next best thing after sliced bread.

The US which has ravaged nations and fought countless illegal wars prides itself as the best nation on earth.

Should I cite more examples of international reputation?

Reputation or image are fancy words for weak nations. We don't care about "world" perception. We are least bothered by how the US perceives us.

All that matters is supreme national interests. We are not going to compromise our interest to please the world. If justice is served by releasing these men so be it. Daniel Pearl was a US deep state spy who did not belong in Pakistan.

You got FATF to your disposal. Use it against us and show us your might.

Unfortunately Pakistan needs more diplomatic recognition from the US and Europe ... otherwise it will slowly but surely be more and more isolated by the world thanks to a rising India despite the efforts of China.

Pakistan doesn't need US and Europe. Pakistan only needs China and other friendly nations who don't undermine it. Pakistan won't be isolated if US and Europe cut relations. The world is much bigger.

Let India rise with the help of US and Europe.

Pakistan will rise with help of China. We are satisfied with China our main ally.

If they committed the crime the punishment is the same for Muslims as non Muslims.

Either its blood for blood, money exchange or Mercy it should be totally upto the victims relatives.

I don't disagree
But at the same time you can't be sending people to Gitmo forever, torturing and launching wars willy nilly and then expect good will and justice from other countries.

At the end of the day, this will have some ripple effects but not much.
We can always hide behind the "WOT" for miscarriage of justice, just like the US did.

. .
KSM who was the prime murderer was handed over to US. The other prime culprit Amjad Faruqi was also shot dead a long time ago.

Omar Saed Sheikh and others were in jail for last 18 years. Its the job of courts to deliver justice, perhaps evidence wasn't enough, what can one say without reading the full judgment.

Daniel Pearl, an idiot who went around bragging about his Jewish identity and about Israel, did he think he would get away with just a slap on his wrist for being an American?

I would like to see even any American go to black neighborhoods and brag about lynching negros and slavery, and tell me if they survive.

Everything wrong with Daniel Pearl, Raymond Davis, and Blackwater/Xe/Academi operatives who feel they can do anything they like without repercussion.

Today, Taliban made sure Academi will not have a future in Afghanistan, and Pakistan also has kicked such people out.

I doubt if a Raymond Davis kills Pakistanis today that he would be able to get to Washington safe.

Doesn't help Pakistan's international reputation here ...

West will do everything to tarnish the image of Muslim countries.

Yet in the US you have hate crimes on blacks and minorities and police brutality which are justified by the media.

I think Pakistan, Turkey, Iran and other countries should highlight crimes of America too.
