Nisar chides cabinet colleague over remarks

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Saturday disputed a cabinet colleague’s account of remarks attributed to him, the latest in a spate of rejoinders issued by the senior minister over the past few days.

Appearing in a programme on Geo News on Saturday night, Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal tried to dispel the impression that Chaudhry Nisar had distanced himself from the party leadership over the Panama Papers saga and the JIT report.

He claimed that during the recent cabinet meeting, there was a consensus that the way the JIT had been working since its inception did not meet the requirements of justice.

He quoted Chaudhry Nisar as referring to his 35 year-long association with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and describing his loyalty as an asset he was proud of in his political journey.

Nearly an hour after the remarks were broadcast, an interior ministry spokesperson issued a strongly worded statement regretting the remarks attributed to Chaudhry Nisar.

The statement also chided the minister, without naming him, and held such leaders responsible for the situation the government was currently faced with.

It said the interior minister had not made the remarks that were repeatedly being attributed to him by a member of the cabinet.

It should be recalled that while the minister attended the cabinet meeting held earlier this week, he skipped the crucial PML-N parliamentary party meeting, held on Friday, on the basis of prior engagements.

The minster was at pains to state that this should not be misconstrued as something symbolic, since he could not make it to the meeting due to personal engagements.

In the same TV show, Mr Iqbal had also said there was a unanimity of views about the fact that the JIT matter had nothing to do with corruption and was politically-motivated.

The minister had stated, ostensibly in relation to the interior minister, that while one may complain about their advice being ignored, one’s character was defined by their decision to complain or to stand by the individual who was in trouble.

This was Chaudhry Nisar’s third rejoinder over remarks attributed to him in the past week. The minister, who is otherwise known for speaking his mind at press conferences, has hinted that he will soon speak to the media about the situation that had developed in the aftermath of the JIT report.

Immediately after the cabinet meeting on Thursday, the interior ministry spokesperson issued a statement contradicting remarks attributed to the minster that were aired by Geo News.

Terming the reporting “incorrect”, the spokesperson had said that the minister’s remarks in the cabinet meeting were on the record and were altogether different from what was being reported.

The very next day, another statement warned the media to refrain from speculating on the remarks being erroneously attributed to the minister. “There were no heated exchanges at the cabinet meeting, nor did the minister walk out of the meeting,” the statement issued on Friday said.

Observers are attaching great significance to the minister’s repeated attempts at clarifying his stance, which have lent credence to reports that the PML-N is a divided house at the moment. Saturday’s statement by Ahsan Iqbal and the subsequent reaction from Chaudhry Nisar has only cemented this impression further.

Their lawyers all know they are screwed and are in danger of being disbarred themselves for submitting forged documents/affidavits. When Sharifs are confronted with this fact and are in danger of being sent to jail, don't you think they will directly blame their lawyers? They are the type of people who will drag you down with them.

Salman Akram Raja is probably pissed Tariq Shafi sold him down the river.

I texted my buddy who happens to be first cousin of Salman Akram raja let see if he can confirm --- i know the legal team entire defense is going to rest on targetting the JIT members - so i doubt PM don't have a legal rep at disposal for tomorrow --- a possible delaying tactic asking for more time

No defections this time, party aides assure PM

LAHORE: No ‘bird’ will fly from the PML-N camp this time around even if its leader is sent packing in the Panama Papers case, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was assured by his comrades in a recent meeting in Islamabad.

But some in the opposition PTI are certain that once the premier resigns or gets disqualified, it is a matter of time that the PML-N will be in “complete disarray”.

“The prime minister has been told by his close aides that gone are the days when his party’s members changed their loyalties in testing times like the Musharraf era. This time around we have spoken to a number of party legislators ‘suspected of changing their loyalties’ but they are of the view that in their constituencies the vote is that of Nawaz Sharif and no one will take the risk of leaving the party because of this fact,” a senior PML-N leader told Dawn here on Saturday.

Some of the premier’s comrades who are not in favour of his resignation have also boasted of likening the post-Nawaz situation to that of Turkey where last July people thronged the roads to thwart a military coup. “All those who are close to the premier are upbeat that if he is sent home the reaction of the people will not be less than that of Turkey’s,” the leader said.

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf vice chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid president Chaudhry Shujaat Husain, Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rashid and PML-N’s disgruntled veteran leader Sardar Zulfiqar Khosa have predicted ‘large-scale defections’ from the ruling party the moment the bells of Mr Sharif’s departure ring. Some of them even put the number of legislators intending to leave the PML-N at around 100.

“A good number of the PML-N legislators in contact with the PTI are awaiting the moment to say goodbye to it (PML-N) as they are opposed to their party’s policy to go into a confrontation with the judiciary in the Panama Papers case. Unlike the PML-N hawks, they want Mr Sharif to shun his stubbornness and resign to let someone else replace him in parliament,” Mr Qureshi said.

He said cracks were visible in the PML-N camp and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan’s reported episode was enough to prove the point. Mr Sharif better listen to the saner voices in his party and resign forthwith because he had lost both the moral and legal authority to stick to his office after the joint investigation team’s revelations in its report about his and his children’s offshore holdings, he said.

When asked about the PML-N’s confidence that there won’t be large-scale defections this time, he said: “Let the premier go home.”

Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said the party had “checked” with its members and “I can guarantee that not a single MNA or MPA from Punjab will defect to the PTI or form a forward bloc”.

“This time around things have changed completely. If the premier is sent packing, let me tell you, the PML-N will return to power with an overwhelming majority. “Besides, there will be a very strong reaction of the masses if the prime minister is disqualified... perhaps no one has figured it out yet.”

The minister said the legislators knew the ground realities. “Politicians are smart enough to know the ground realities of their constituencies. The political career of those who left the Sharifs in the past ended. This in not 1999 — public support is with the Sharifs and our party’s men know this.”

Bull shit analysis ... Stupid advisors of PMLN are dragging NS to further mess ... Remember it all started from resignation of NS only ... Had NS acted at that point career of MN would have been saved but unfortunately his advisor made him to shoot in his own feet and asking him to do the same ...

We all know he is guilty and the way ministers are calling for evidence if bribery they are forcing for further investigation into sources of funds which means that state if Pakistan has to arrest people depositing the unknown travellers cheques into the account including source if fundings of NS sons ...

It will make the case against them further strong and eventually state of Pakistan can move towards confiscating all the assets of Sharif family ...including Shahbaz ..

Your opinion @Farah Sohail @PakSword @QatariPrince @Verve
