Pakistan's most favoured nation status for India

In a big break with the past, the Pakistan government has expressed its readiness to grant the most favoured nation status to India in a couple of months after getting a green signal from all stakeholders.

According to Pakistani media reports in Islamabad on Monday, the country’s commerce ministry, as a first step, has sent a summary to all stakeholders, seeking their comments on changing the decades-old trade regime with India. If no objection is raised, the summary will be sent to the federal cabinet for a final approval.

The environment to grant MFN status to Indian turned favourable in the wake of the recent tensions in Pakistan’s ties with its top trading partner, the United States. Pakistan’s exports at an estimated $4 billion in 2010-11 make the US the only country with which it enjoy surplus.

Experts say granting MFN status to India will not only reduce tensions between the two countries but also earn support from India at a time when the US has accused Pakistan of having links with the Haqqani network of Afghanistan.

While the government appears to have put aside some crucial issues, including Kashmir, that have marred economic relation between the two countries, it has made the MFN decision conditional to the removal of non-tariff barriers by India.

. . . .
Hope this will usher in a new dawn, in our two countries relations. However we both have to move cautiously as granting of MFN status itself will not guarantee full blown trade relations. The intent and zeal towards this goal should be put in by all the stake holders. Thanks Sparky for this positive news.

Good stuff going.. Now if only the trust issues could be resolved..

Money can change anyone's mind and it can bring peace too:victory1: Let them try something to bridge the gap.

Apart from their own(India and PAK) issues.....WEST and China wont let this grow beyond an extent

Well, if you paint donkey with black and white lines, that doesn't make it Zebra.

The MFN status can help in reducing hatred which the people of both sides possess?

Its a good move. This is the only way of making peace. Trade brings Money, profit to each region, employment, helps in developing relation, prosperity and could also help in forgetting and resolving issues. Hope so as time passes this trade increases to many folds and Pakistan could feel its stupidity to hold on to Kashmir issue. Also Pakistan is in dire need for such relation. And from Indian point of view its a very good move cause " You can change your friends but you cant change your neighbors".

Probably money may alleviate severity for some extent but no way to resolve the issues. I agree with ur last point.

Hope that the mistrust is reduced and Pakistan's ISI should get a head who believes in "No Non State Actor" policy. And India should help Pakistan in rebuilding its infra that was blown by the terror outfits and also we should move futher to go for Military Joint Excercises some day.

Peace
