Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has repeated his country’s support for the Chinese government regarding its policies in the Muslim-majority Xinjiang province, while also praising the country’s one-party system as offering a better model for societies compared with electoral democracy.

Khan was speaking to members of the Chinese news media who were visiting Islamabad as part of the 100th anniversary celebrations of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on Thursday.

Rights groups accuse China of systematic and widespread “mass internment and torture amounting to crimes against humanity” against the Muslim population in its southwestern Xinjiang province.

In a report last month, Amnesty International termed the situation in Xinjiang “a dystopian hellscape”, citing dozens of witness accounts that detailed allegations of brainwashing, torture and an erasure of cultural identity.

But Khan, who has regularly called for international action against Islamophobia, particularly in European countries, said he was satisfied with the Chinese government’s denials of any rights abuses.

“Our interaction with Chinese officials, that version of what is happening in Xinjiang is completely different to the version of what we hear from the Western media and the Western governments,” he said on Thursday.

“Because we have our very strong relationship with China, and because we have a relationship based on trust, so we actually accept the Chinese version. What they say about their programmes in Xinjiang, we accept it.”

Pakistan shares a longstanding strategic relationship with its northeastern neighbour China, which has invested more than $60bn in the country through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project.

Khan also lauded the one-party system of governance in China, where the state is exclusively controlled by the Communist Party of China and there are no direct elections for major positions or the country’s parliament.

“The CPC is a unique model. Up until now, we were told that the best way for societies to improve themselves is the Western system of democracy,” said Khan.

“What the CPC has done is that it has brought this alternative model. And they have actually beaten all Western democracies in the way they have brought up merit in their society.”

Khan, who was elected to power in a general election in 2018, said electoral democracy “straight-jackets you” when it comes to reforms, and lauded the “flexibility” of the Chinese model.

“Up until now, the feeling was that electoral democracy is the best way where you get leadership based on merit, and then hold that leadership accountable. But what the CPC has done is that without that electoral democracy it has actually achieved that much better,” he said.

MR Khan wants Pakistanis to be the next CCP I suppose. Dear Pakistanis- Are you ready to be told how to worship/what to read/ watch/ say/ believe/ behave by a single-party Government in Pakistan, going forward?

We're Pakistani, that shit doesn't sell here. It would be as unsuccessful as parliamentary democracy.

In my opinion we need a hybrid. We need a strong authoritarian central government, a presidential system with the ability to make and enforce decisions but we need a decent degree of devolution to local level where candidates who prove their worth can be selected to power to manage local level governance.

Perhaps you hate reading or imagine if you say it ain't so- it would be true. It clearly states in that quote that he stated he liked the one-party system in the article (that's not economics, that's political), and later in the article speaks in favor of the CCP alternative system (political) to a Democracy.

His words, not mine!

Nowhere does he say even in that quote that he wants that system in Pakistan... ???? Where are you reading these imaginary things???

ARE YOU RETARDED ????

.
I think from now on, IK is going to be under the microscope. Anything he said will be used against him to undermine his government and Pakistan. IK should watch before opening his mouth, till the storm ends.
What IK admires in china is the development, and social and economic progress that the prc has made over last 70 years. We know the ccp style system won't cut it here, so this is mere propaganda to tarnish his image before the ultimate showdown to bring him down.

.
Can Pakistan survive a Chinese style one party system?

To be honest, I don't know much about Chinese one party system but PM Imran Khan seems very impressed with it. He's now mentioned it on number of occasions.

Can Pakistan afford to experiment with the system?

Do the Chinese and Vietnames have same one party system or are they different? If same, how has China progressed much better than Vietnam?

He merely stated facts. Isnt it true that the CPC have achieved marvellous growth in such a short time? Isnt it true that they brought 700 million people out of poverty? What has electoral democracy achieved? India claims to be biggest democracy and acts worst than dictatorships. Electoral democracy is just an illusion of freedom, in the back its just powerful lobbies, media manipulation, personal gains. CPC have done an amazing job and that is why the west is jealous, and indians being their puppies just rant.

I agree with what you are saying, but just wanted to mention something i heard the other day. Apparently the standard by which they rate poverty is someone living on less than "$2.50 a day or something like that. It's true there is no longer extreme poverty, but apparently according to the vlogger i was listening too, there is still significant poverty.

Either way good for them, 700 million people are living better lives, regardless of the measure, this is something to be celebrated and replicated.

Ofcourse everyone cannot be rich but they have free housing, education and medical care. The basic necessities that many countries have failed to provide. Their growth is phenomenal, unseen anywhere in known human history. This speaks alot about the system that brought such revolution.

I would say it is more due to Japan. Japanese has achieved parity with Western powers since 1935 and then invade some part of China. Japanese also become the reason of why Taiwan and Korean are so developed.

If we have advance neighbor like Japan, it is naturally pushing us more and particularly due to Japan is seen as competitor and "enemy" of Chinese.

Later many Taiwanese companies invest in mainland China that develop the nation further.

I agree... strong national/unitary state with strong, but small, districts. I think doing so will give rise to many new municipalities (towns or cities) because of more local empowerment. The provincial gov'ts must go, but I think local gov'ts in their place should have the right to manage health, education, language, etc the way they see fit. Yes, it'll give rise to some weird areas, but it's the cost of placating many diverse people. In most cases, I think the local areas will move forward.

What difference does it make if one party tell you "how to worship/what to read/ watch/ say/ believe/ behave" or in case of the USA 2 parties take turn to tell you the same thing or in case of India on paper 2 parties however in reality just BJP do exactly the same thing like "how to worship/what to read/ watch/ say/ believe/ behave"

You people have been brainwashed to think that the sham democracy in your countries some how makes your countries better and that your vote actually makes a difference. I am sorry to tell you it doesn't. It will still be one of the 2 parties taking turns to rule over you and tell you what to do while making you think that you have a say in your own future.

If you think about it with your eyes not closed, you will see no difference in a country with one party or in a country with 2 parties taking turns.
