Pakistan’s first optical remote sensing satellite to be launched in 2018

KARACHI: Pakistan’s first optical remote sensing satellite PRSS-1 would be launched in 2018. This was announced in a statement by the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) on Wednesday.

It said that the World Space Week 2017 commenced on Wednesday and the inaugural ceremony of the event was organized by SUPARCO. It was held at the Institute of Space Technology (IST) Islamabad. Chairman SUPARCO Qaiser Anees Khurram formally inaugurated the ceremony as chief guest.

At a ceremony which held at National Center for Remote Sensing & Geo Informatics (NCRG) SUPARCO Headquarters, Karachi, Member Range and Instrumentation (R&I), Ayaz Aziz was the Chief guest.

The World Space Week celebrations would be held simultaneously from October 4-10 in 16 cities of Pakistan.

Member R&I, Ayaz Aziz in his address said that SUPARCO is proudly associated with World Space Week since 2005 as the national coordinator of World Space Week Association (WSWA) in Pakistan.

‘It is our privilege to be among 86 countries throughout the world that celebrates and contributes in the promotion of space science and technology every year, he added.

Highlighting the contribution of SUPARCO on the socio-economic paradigm, he remarked `We have substantially contributed to natural resource management and environment modeling through glacier monitoring, land cover classification of Pakistan, land information system, national environment information management system etc. The agriculture sector is being served with active crop estimation programme. Risk & Disaster assessment, mitigation and management project are under way’.

He further added that `Our first optical remote sensing satellite PRSS-1 is all set to be launched in 2018 with which Pakistan will become self-reliant in multispectral imaging thus saving a huge foreign exchange on account of satellite imagery and satellite based monitoring of various national projects. Our communication satellite Paksat-1R is up and running with efficient provision of communication and broadcast services throughout the country and neighboring regions.

Ayaz Aziz said `World Space Week excites young people, especially students to understand our universe and how much it has to offer and encourages them to seek knowledge, education and careers in the fields of Space science & technology’.

The inaugural ceremony concluded with inauguration of the space education bus by the Chief Guest and a team of SUPARCO officials departed to create space related awareness in school students in rural areas of Sindh. – APP

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan is all set to launch the indigenous Remote Sensing Satellite into the space by March 2018, SUPARCO Director has confirmed today in Islamabad.

Earlier Pakistan had announced to send indigenous state of the art satellite into space to make stronger its position in space technology and a sum of Rs. 7.5 billion has been owed in the budget 2017 for this program.

Pakistan is expected to be able to send the new satellite in space by late 2017. The head base of this satellite program to be set up in Punjab’s capital city Lahore while the Sub-Offices will be Functioned in Karachi, Sui, and Muzaffarabad.

Work has started off for the development of satellite station under Pakistan’s Space research commission SUPARCO. According to officials, the new project will get function in this financial year 2017.

The Pakistan’s neighboring countries, China, and India have left Pakistan far behind in quantity of satellites launched by them and they are taking enormous economic & defense payback from them.

On the other side, Pakistan had sent only one satellite into space earlier. The induction of the new satellite will guide in the new uprising in the field of communication in Pakistan, besides bolstering country’s probability for satellite monitoring & achieving defense and Military targets.

This program will also assist in ensuring a reasonable distribution of water among five provinces under 1991 water distribution accord.

but Why it matters to you? do you think Pakistan cant build or acquire SLV tech like ISRO?

Why spend billions on developing indigenous SLV when Pakistan launch 2 satellite in decade??

It's already been stated the potential to restructure Pakistan's missiles as SLVs which they were originally constructed for.

Seems ambitious for a satellite to be developed in 1 year. Miraculously 7.5Billion Rupees shows up? But the amount itself does suggest the satellite would be domestic.

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) will provide comprehensive satellite service to monitor the $46 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and address its security concerns.

This was said by a Suparco delegation during a meeting with President Mamnoon Hussain at the presidency here on Tuesday.

According to a spokesman for the president, Suparco chairman Maj Gen Qaiser Anees Khurram briefed Mr Hussain on the commission’s ongoing satellite development projects and its role and contribution in completion of CPEC projects.

The president appreciated the technology-based support the commission is providing to the CPEC in major areas.

The meeting was informed that Suparco was providing complete geo sensing of the entire corridor from Gwadar to Khunjerab (Pak-China border).

The president expressed satisfaction that all related institutions were contributing to completion of projects under the CPEC and said the role of Suparco in this regard was of great significance.

He also praised the role of Suparco in the country’s economic progress and development and said the commission needed to brief government departments on its capabilities for optimum utilisation of its expertise in agriculture, water resources, healthcare, education, disaster management and environment monitoring. Suparco should also promote awareness among the public about usefulness of space technology.

The president said the CPEC would pave the way for economic development not only of Pakistan but also of the whole region, adding that immense employment opportunities and other avenues for economic progress would be created.

A source in the presidency said that Suparco’s satellite service would help secure those CPEC areas which were vulnerable to terrorist attacks and criminal activities. He said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and President Hussain would have access to the satellite service and would be able to monitor CPEC projects on their computers. The service would also help curb encroachments and land grabbing along the corridor, the source added.

The Senate’s Standing Committee on Planning and Development was on Monday informed that people had started encroaching land along the CPEC and settling there and it would be difficult for the authorities to remove them.

The satellite service will help monitor the pace of infrastructural development like construction of roads and establishment of power generation units and economic zones along the corridor.

A Special Security Division (SSD) comprising over 4,500 security personnel is being established to ensure security of CPEC-related projects and Chinese nationals. The terms of reference for the division are being prepared, which will be discussed with the provinces.

The planning and development ministry has allocated one per cent of the total cost of CPEC projects for funding the SSD.
