Pakistan needs to realize that given Afghanistan’s highly fragile security situation and weak economic position, these refugees, upon their repatriation, would be walking into disaster zones, with little or no means to survive.

This factor stood prominent when I spoke to one such Afghan refugee recently. He was born in Pakistan in 1987 and has been working as a vegetable vendor for the last 14 years in Rawalpindi.

“What will happen if we’re forced to return to our village in Kunar, Afghanistan, which has been overrun by the Taliban?” the 29-year-old countered when I questioned his reluctance to return home. His family had fled Afghanistan when the Soviet-Afghan war broke out in 1979.

“Where shall we live in our village when the money being paid to us (by UNHCR) is hardly enough to buy a house?” he asked further.

Same can be said for the Mexicans which the Americans are trying to get rid off but are facing problems with. When refugees become a problem than they are a liability and as per Mr. Ghani, his country is facing problems from Pakistan and India is helping them then why I India is not helping them with repatriation of Afghanis.
