Pakistani universities witness phenomenal growth in research publications.

Pakistani Universities have witnessed phenomenal growth in Research publications as they increased by 87 per cent from 2002 to 2011 despite 40 per cent cut in the Higher Education Commission (HEC) development funds in the last three years.

Information collected from the HEC on Thursday revealed that Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad secured first position with 717 research publications, University of Agriculture Faisalabad second with 524 publications and Agha Khan University Karachi was third with 521 publications. The number of publications has increased from 800 to 6,000 from in the same period, however, research publication were 5,000 in 2010.

The publications cover all major disciplines including physical, agriculture & veterinary, biological, medical and social management sciences along with engineering.

As a result of exceptional increase in research publications, Pakistan's contribution to research sector of the world increased by 300 per cent in last five years. In Pakistan 90 per cent of the research publications come from higher education institutions HEIs.

The education experts described this achievement in higher education sector of Pakistan as a miracle and result of the revolutionary reforms introduced by HEC and dedicated hard work by the university faculty and researchers.

According to a senior official of the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) research work output has grown eightfold after the establishment of HEC in 2002. The provision of access to 75 per cent of the World's literature (23,000 e-journals and 45,000 e-books) through digital library has been of great help in promoting research culture in Pakistan, he added.

He called for introduction of incentives for the universities faculty and PhD scholars encouraging them to write research articles in national and international recognised journals. However, two Pakistani universities ranked among the top 300 Technology Universities of the World, include University of Engineering and Technology Lahore (UET) and National University of Science and Technology Islamabad (NUST), according to Quality Standard World University Ranking 2011.

Meanwhile, according to Quality Standard Asian Universities Rankings 2012, at least six Pakistani universities are ranked among the top 300 Asian universities, including National University of Science and Technology Islamabad (NUST), Agha Khan University, University of Engineering and Technology Lahore (UET), Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), University of Lahore and University of Karachi.
