DUBAI: The Pakistani expatriate community in the UAE will now be allowed to renew their passports for 10 years.

Subsequently, the government of Pakistan has increased the fee for the new initiative by upto 80 per cent.

The announcement was made by Javed Jalil Khattak, consul-general of Pakistan in Dubai and Northern Emirates, while talking to a gathering of media persons in the consulate on Sunday.

The initiative of issuing the 10-year validity passport was taken some six months ago on a trial basis.

“Now the government of Pakistan has officially announced to start this initiative at all overseas Pakistani missions with the revised fee structure to minimise the difficulties of overseas Pakistanis who have to renew their passport every five years,” he said.

According to the officials, the new fee structure, which was increased by around 80 per cent, will range from Dhs272 of 36 pages for 10 years for ordinary and Dhs452 for urgent.

The fee for a 100 page booklet for 10-years will be Dhs542 (ordinary) and Dhs1082 (urgent).

Earlier, the 36-page passport booklet for five years cost Dhs151 (ordinary) and Dhs251 (urgent). The 100-page passport booklet for 10 years costs Dhs301 (ordinary) and Dhs601 (urgent).

It is noteworthy that 20 per cent of the fee being charged from the expatriates for the issuing of new passports or renewal is allocated for public community welfare and education fund.
Khattak said that the government has approved mobile service for communities in the Northern Emirates to provide consulate services at their doorsteps. A number of other initiatives to benefit the community are underway.

What does that mean? Do we even have an effective community welfare let alone education fund?!
