Theorist Peter Higgs lives to see his boson
Will Higgs lead us to a 'Star Trek' transporter?
The Higgs boson made simple
The science world celebrated last week when a group of Swiss researchers discovered the elusive Higgs boson "God particle." Sadly, Abdus Salam, the physicist who predicted the particle's existence and won a Nobel Prize for his efforts, neither lived to witness Wednesday's historic announcement nor is recognized in his native Pakistan. Salam was once a name that schoolchildren saw in textbooks, but he's now shunned due to his religious affiliation. Salam was an Ahmadi, a sect declared to be non-Muslim in an amendment to Pakistan's constitution, a law enforced even after death. The word "Muslim" was even removed from Salam's tombstone. "The way he has been treated is such a tragedy," physicist Pervez Hoodbhoy says.
