A Pakistani man was sentenced to 33 months in a US prison for attempting to export military equipment for the Pakistani military without a license, the US Justice Department said on Thursday.

Syed Vaqar Ashraf had previously pleaded guilty to trying to procure gyroscopes and illegally ship them to Pakistan so they could be used by the Pakistani military, the Justice Department said in a news release.

However, the claim that the equipment was meant for Pakistan military could not be confirmed.

According to the US Justice Department, Ashraf had purchased the equipment in the name of a shell company and directed the shipment to be sent to Belgium.

He was apprehended by the Belgium Federal Police at the request of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents on August 26, 2014.

Ashraf was in the country to inspect and forward the gyroscopes to Pakistan.

HSI had been conducting an undercover investigation of Ashraf's activities; the case was further investigated by Belgium Federal Police.

Assistant Attorney General for National Security John P. Carlin and US Attorney John S. Leonardo of the District of Arizona made the announcement of the sentence on Thursday.

Man apprehended for trying to export gyroscopes for Pakistani military...however the claim could not be confirmed..and in this entire world..a professional institute of Pakistani military could only find this dumb n00b to export gyroscopes...he could have been trying to smuggle but could for some local drone maker or hobby market...military knows its contraband procurement much better than this...

Well producing high quality gyroscope that can be used in military is not that easy . and also there are many type of gyroscope
By the way if the gyroscope you produce is not one of these two type its pretty much useless in modern military equipment.

I for sure know that Fibre optic gyroscopes have been used in many of of our military equipment. Maybe we imported them from china but it is for sure not a new tech for us.

Well I knew you have been used them . every single missile (long or short range) you have made have one inside . every single UAV you have made have one inside . even your airplanes have one and I don't knew if you import it from China or built it yourself (since 2005 we are building them ourselves),but the question is why this guy have to import them from USA I'm sure China had no problem selling as much gyroscope to you as you needed .

Maybe some new generation design which they are using in their missiles or planes.
