What happened to Pakistani hockey team. In 80s and 90s Pakistani hockey team used to be a powerhouse.
why are we not seeing it in Olympics ?
I believe there is no dearth of talent. Then what happened ?

Its a sh*t team now. Young generation is more interested in online games like fortnite / minecrafts than outdoor sports. Also schools do not invest in sports. Most of their extracurricularum activities are focused on red day/green day/ yellow day crap or most is in arts/paintings. Most playable sport in good Pakistani schools (private) now is football though decades back it used to be hockey and cricket.

Cricket gets lion's share of attention from Pakistani sports board and hockey like all other sports gets neglected. Hockey is virtually orphan when it comes to funding.

Pakistan hockey was weakenwd by introduction of astroturf and the rest by poor management and lack of funding.

Funding / sponsers will come itself if we have the talent. Sadly there is not quality talent in hockey anymore. After Shahbaiz Sr and Tahir Zaman, only super star, infact half super star was Sohail Abbas who retired from the game some 10 years back I believe.

In the 80s and 90s hockey was not played on astro turf and this caused it to be slower allowing less physical teams like Pakistan to excel just on the basis of their skill. Now hockey is played at break neck speed and Pakistani players cannot keep up with the supreme fitness exhibited by the Europeans.

Other factor is that hockey is not played even at miniscule level in the major cities. It had moved to smaller second tier cities and even there it is being relegated to third fourth place in terms of popularity.

Funny thing is I think amongst the new generation football is more popular than even cricket and we can have a competitive team atleast at the Asian level in 10-15 years if we put in the effort.

As for hockey it seems like a no hoper now. Unless we have a hugely glitzy and glamour league like the PSL to reinvigorate youth's interest in the sport.

that was long time ago and Pak recovered that.
Real reasons are

Astroturf was already there in 80s and 90s. We won 2 World Cups on these astroturfs.

As far as our fitness is concerned , yes we dropped the ball here.

They even removed the off side rule. Hockey itself was destroyed.

Indian hockey is also sadly not the power house it used to be back in the 1900s.
Hope we can secure the bronze in men's and women's hockey this Olympics.

I tbink like tennis, playing hockey on different surfaces must be brought back. You are considered an great if one can excel in 4 surfaces. Hockey can make with 2-3. Astro, grass and clay (can introduce new surface). The subcontinent should never have given up the leadership of the FIH. The game has been gamed to favor the white man.

Lack of funding and the obsession with cricket. Squash has also gone, as has wrestling.
Just terrible.

Too late - Lost cause.

Personally, I hate Cricket. But, I'm also part of the 0.00000001%,so my opinion is as relevant as a fart in a space craft.

One can't truly blame a sport for its religious following.

Pakistan Hockey has lost key Sponcers. Mainly NBP that kept the standards up. Domestic Hockey needs a push by introducing leagues similar to PSL and maybe - maybe some hidden talent could be discovered.

It's all great that we keep an eye on other Olympic-related Sports, but shall we attempt to fix what's broken, before we embark in uncharted territory.

I hope useless cricket follows the same feat as hockey. Nothing to be sad about sports that were introduced by imperialists britshit empire. Its like teaching ur illegitimate kids ur rapists habits.....
Pakistan should invest in mma, shooting sports, archery, swimming, running, etc instead of crying over hockey and cricket.
