Pakistani businessman plans fast against corruption

ISLAMABAD: An Islamabad businessman plans a fast against corruption and high military spending, mirroring a move in neighbouring India where efforts to stop popular anti-graft activist Anna Hazare from a hunger strike this week sparked national protests.

The protest by Jahangir Akhtar, an Islamabad businessman who has fasted before to draw attention to bad governance, is not slated to begin until after the Muslim fasting month of Ramazan ends.

He says the campaign is for “Pakistan to bring a bill in the parliament against corruption … and to cut the budget of the army of Pakistan.”

But Akhtar says although he supports Hazare’s protest, the Gandhian-style campaigner is not his inspiration.

“I announced my hunger strike before Anna Hazare, but due to Ramazan I postponed it, because our custom in Pakistan is that I cannot take water during Ramazan.”

Akhtar plans to start his strike on September 12.

Akhtar says he hopes he will draw enough attention to the issue that an anti-corruption bill will be introduced in the National Assembly, and that funds will be directed away from the military budget and towards tackling issues that affect the population, like the nation’s beleaguered power sector.

“Pakistan is a developing country, and in our country the two most important problems are corruption and the high percentage of expenditure that goes on our army budget.”

Pakistan is also regularly listed as one of the world’s most corrupt countries, with Transparency International raking it as the 34th most corrupt in 2010.

“In Pakistan the situation is worse now,” Akhtar said. “The economic crisis is here, terrorism is here, there is political instability. There are a lot of problems that reflect on our society. I am trying to show – and say – the Pakistan common man has power.”

One things make me sad is Pakistan doesn't have own creatives ideas to solve problems themselves. It is just India examples of Anna Hazare and then Pakistan follow it whatever it suits them.

You should respect his intent rather than idea. People all across the world take the ideas from great people all round the world. There is nothing to be get sad. I won't mind taking a leaf out of Pakistan's book to make my society better.

There is nothing wrong in taking inspiration from another country, after all it is for a good cause which will do immense of good things for people of Pakistan. Let us the Indians and Pakistanis wish good luck to each other for our fight against the corruption.

Dear Raptor,
Please for God sake don't get obsessed with everything that's Indian.
Non-Violence and Satyagrah of Gandhi had admirers all over world. Black Americans got Equal rights through Martin Luthur King and South Africa through Nelson Mandela. Both of them followed the Gandhi way.
I forgot to mention one name Khan Abdul Ghafoor Khan (know as Frontier Gandhi in India).
Now you see after such huge protest all over India for three days, it didn't report any violence but GOI is and will be forced to act against corruption

it may look a bit disheartening at first, but people need inspiration to get things started.

Once people/society get ontrack, sensible leaders would soon popping up.

At least have a start...

I have no problem following Bharat or Israel in something good and positive but it should be fruitful. In this case it is all drama and media hype. Nothing would change on ground. Yeah due to Anna Hazare Congress might lose the elections and BJP would form the govt in center. With change of faces status quo would stay and corruption would prosper. Following Bharat in something which would give results isn't bad in my opinion.

Try to stop corruption in the third world, and you will become a victim yourself.

By the way, any details on how big of a business man this guy is?

I mean the big industrialists aren't planning any such thing........

I doubt BJP will come to power though they are more predictable and strightforward ( relatively) than congress. but off late they also have lost the plot. songress is slightly the lesser evil. But what Anna campaign will achive is some form of draft be presented for legislation. some thing is better than nothing
