Pakistan’s top professional boxer and two-time World Boxing Council (WBC) silver flyweight champion Muhammad Waseem knocked out Panama’s Ivan Trejos in Panama City.

Waseem knocked out his opponent in the third round of the international ranking fight.

This was the second fight for the 2014 Asian Games bronze medalist this month, after he knocked out Panama’s Eliecer Valdez on July 5 on his way to preparing for the world title bout.

Waseem, who hails from Quetta, has been preparing in Panama since June 29 with Las Vegas-based trainer Jeff Mayweather, the uncle of world-famous Floyd Mayweather, for a probable WBC title fight in December this year.

The 29-year-old shot to fame as a pro when he won world silver title by beating Jether Oliva of the Philippines on July 17, 2016, in Korea. He went on to defend his crown on November 27 last year, also in Korea, after downing Giemel Magramo of the Philippines.

'We were all tense'

Talking to Geo News in Quetta, Waseem’s brother thanked the nation for praying for his brother.

“Waseem had said it would be a tough fight so we [family] were all stressed. But when he informed us of the knockout we were overjoyed,” he said.

Knock out: Baloch defends national title

Waseem, who turned pro in 2015, won the WBC silver title in July last year winning against Philippines’ Jether Oliva and successfully defended it against another Filipino, Geimel Magramo in November.

While talking to The Express Tribune, Waseem revealed that it took him two rounds to understand the opponents’ game. “It was a good fight I enjoyed it against Trejos,” said Waseem. “Trejos threw some very strong punches in the first two rounds and my strategy was to exhaust him first. Basically, he gave his all in the first two rounds and I understood his game, since I never saw any of his fights before, I took my time and then I did all I could to win.
