ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and United States Embassy on Friday agreed that modalities to establish Pak-US Knowledge Corridor should be materialised at its earliest and vowed to work speedily and jointly.

The agreement materialised during a meeting between a delegation of US Embassy in Pakistan led by Public Affairs Counselor Christina Tomlinson and Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms Ahsan Iqbal. The minister emphasised the need to develop an institutional framework to implement Knowledge Corridor initiative in US universities and opined that Pakistani Diaspora, which is well connected in US society, can help to realise this objective.

The minister said, “Two countries agreed on Pak-US Knowledge Corridor during the prime minister’s visit to US to enchance the bilateral ties in education, science and technology. The top leadership of both countries laid the foundation of this corridor. It is now our duty to translate it into tangible results as early as possible.”

Appreciating the high standard of education in US universities, Ahsan Iqbal said that this corridor envisions partnership between Pakistan and US universities to prepare 10,000 Phds in next ten years for the country. Pakistan needs 10,000 Phds by 2025 to fulfil present government’s initiative to set up sub-campus of universities at district levels and to fulfil the needs of faculty at these campuses. “We want greater linkage with the US universities to bring benefit for our youth,”he remarked.

Ahsan Iqbal said that the Knowledge Corridor would help to enhance the ratio of Pakistani students in US universities, which is presently very low compared to other countries in South Asia. The large number of students through this corridor in US universities would be agents of change when they return to Pakistan, he maintained.

“Pakistan need to learn from software of US universities to take our own universities to international standards as well as improve industry-academia link, which is currently non-existent in our country,” he asserted. The members of US Embassy delegation appreciated the idea and vision of the minister to establish Pak-US Knowledge Corridor and assured that US would be fully supportive to realise this objective.

and what are these 10,000 PhDs going to do? There are no jobs that require that level of high skilled people. Enough of PhDs in anthropology and sociology.

So not worth it then...spending thousands of dollars on training PhDs and 4-5 years.......better to use same money for micro-financing of entrepreneurship ventures.

What about those unis which have no PhD as lecturers but are teaching and training PhD students? or those Medical schools with no lecturers at all? What about those collages that got upgraded even when they dont have the basics for a uni name but are producing bogus graduates?

Wow what a waste! What is the use of studying so high only to land as a clerk? Shows no vision there! You need to create jobs not create PhD graduates who will figure out how to rig the system and earn whether you like it or not! We have not much research going on...Open those channels so we can make stuff and sell no keep old ancient fossils with metric fail in dept onyl coz they will feel offended if you remove them!

Great step ... US should give deserving students more scholarships .. Open univ campuses here .. That's the real way to win "hearts & minds".

India also has a higher literacy rate ! And a booming economy (education playing a big part here)...

India also has a population of over 1.2 billion and 500 million poor..

Pak on the other hand doesn't doesn't have issues on that massive scales.. Yes poverty etc are our issues.. But education is pretty much a key to success of any state..!

We don't have enough PHDs in criminology and criminal justice

Heck we used to pride ourselves with good doctors and engineers but recently medical schools and uni are in a mess and the bloody mindset is still stuck in doctor bahu and mera munna engineer banay ga!

Once this gets unbrainwashed than only can we get new fields populated! Heck my cousin had to fight half the family just to get into sociology field!

. .
Most of the Pakistani students particularly those related to STEM fields are going to Germany these days for their post-grad studies....Australia is also a popular option inspite of the high cost !

Folks are unsure about the U.S visa process.

We would have preferred dollars corridor where we could pick some $$$ to buy our defence needs.

Just my 2 cents.

PHDs are rarely ever needed, outside of R&D...

Just raise the quality of existing bachelors and masters programmes in the country, that's what's desperately needed.

Yes You Are Right But Think About It A Large Reserves Of PhD Scientists and Engineers Would Allow Pakistan To Produce World Class Export Quality Products.
