Pakistan to test 5G mobile internet by 2020

KARACHI: Pakistan is set to test the most advanced mobile internet, 5G, by the year 2020, as the telecom regulator works towards setting technical standards and inviting applications from mobile operators for the spectrum award.

“The government would facilitate all existing as well as new companies to test 5G in Pakistan. The facilitation would be in the form of free test licence and spectrum,” said Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Dr Syed Ismail Shah at a workshop in Islamabad.

“Harmonised spectrum for 5G is [available] in the 3.5 GHz band,” he informed participants at the workshop, according to a PTA handout.

“An EoI [Expression of Interest or invite for applications] would be floated at a suitable time to gauge interest in conducting a trial before the standard is finalised in the year 2020,” he said.


Currently, 5G mobile broadband is not available in any country. However, the US, UK, China and South Korea have set 2020 as their deadline to launch the service.

Shah said that the government has always encouraged new ideas and supported initiatives for the use of technology.

He added that the PTA and Ministry of Information and Technology (MoIT) are working on several fronts to increase the access of broadband technologies to far-flung areas of Pakistan, and improve the quality of service and quality of experience while keeping pace with the modern technologies.

The PTA and Ministry of IT and Telecom Division in collaboration with Qualcomm Pakistan organised the one-day workshop on ‘Technology Evolution & Roadmap to 5G’ in Islamabad.


Minister of State for IT Anusha Rahman has also on several occasions stated that Pakistan would be among the first few countries in South Asia to have 5G services.

The workshop was arranged to take steps toward introducing the latest technologies in line with the vision of the government of Pakistan.

Another speaker Khalid Barghouti talked about evolution, tests, trials and development of 5G technologies in various countries.

“Some countries have even declared access to broadband as a basic human right,” he said.

WELL at least we are thinking forward regarding the telecommunication sector...

Believe me , no operator (ufone , mobilink , telenor , zong) is going to launch 5G as no one has any money leftt in pocket. They are still in loss for buying 3G & 4G licences and people are getting fired jobs due to no new projects in pipe line.

Well one thing may surprise all guys here that Pakistan's share in international internet bandwidth has increased 4 times just in 2016. Previously it was 6Tb(Tera bits) and now its 30TB. I dont know why TW1 guys bought that much BW, but I think something is really being cooked behind the scenes, and may be its 5G or may be IoT.
5G is something that will be like a joint venture of many companies, and no company in Pakistan is in a position to provide 5G all alone, because 5G is all about seamless connectivity like e.g wifi -> mobile tower -> wifi -> picocell -> ...... connection wouldn't be broken across networks.

With the prevalence of Wifi Hotspots, I don't find even 4G that useful.

Mobile tech has reached a point where lower costs are way more important than higher speeds now.

I don't think by 2020 5G would be tested in developed countries let alone in Pakistan. It's not just a speed boost we are talking about but the whole infrastructure redesign and even if ti's ready by 2020 it's commercial application would not happen unless the whole ecosystem for intelligent devices is developed and the society is at a level to adopt it. I don't think Pakistan would be an early adopter of this technology and would wait for it to become cheaper and mature.

While the Government of Pakistan will make money by selling the spectrum through auction.
India made 10 billion USD on its 4G auction.

Although Pakistan not a big market, yet at least some money will come into GOP coffer.

You were buying 4G capable devices before the networks were capable of delivering true 4G to the device. Your brain knows that 4G is faster than 3G so you pay the price for the extra speed. Marketing 101. The same will probably be true when 5G hits the markets.
It is still a challenge to get a true 4G connection, which promises upwards of a 1Gps, Gigabit per second, transfer rate if you are standing still and in the perfect spot. 4G LTE comes very close to closing this gap. True 4G on a wide spread basis may not be available until the next generation arrives. 5G?
There are rumors of 5G being tested although the specifications of 5G have not been formally clarified. We can expect that new technology to be rolled out around 2020 but in this fast-paced world it will probably be much sooner than that. Seems like a long ways away but time flies and so will 5G at speeds of 1-10Gbps.

Where does it go from here and why does this site exist? Not sure where this path will lead
