Pakistan to raise issue Bangladesh 1971 war crimes hangings at UN: Sartaj

ISLAMABAD (Staff Report) – Prime Minister’s Advisor on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz said that Pakistan would raise the issue of the hanging of Jamaat-e-Islami leaders in Bangladesh at the UN human rights council and with other countries.

Speaking in the Senate on Friday, he regretted the executions of political opponents by the Bangladesh government, saying that the Muslim world and the international community had both expressed their concerns in this regard.

Aziz urged the international community to take notice of the hangings, which are a violation of human rights and the tripartite agreement between Pakistan, India and Bangladesh in 1974.

Leader of the House Raja Zafarul Haq said that Muslim countries should jointly prepare a plan to prevent further politically-motivated executions in Bangladesh.

Earlier, House members appreciated Turkey for withdrawing its envoy from Bangladesh and said that Pakistan should also adopt a strong stance on the matter.

Responding to a calling attention notice on the brutal jirga-ordered killing of a young girl in Abbottabad, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Shaikh Aftab Ahmad said that the federal and provincial governments had taken notice of the incident.

Some of the attacks and killings that occurred in December 1971 are largely absent from the ‘liberation’ literature of Bangladesh. One of them was widely reported in the international press at the time, along with photographs. It was the public bayoneting of a group of civilians in the heart of Dhaka by the Mukti Bahini commander Kader (‘Tiger’) Siddiqi of Tangail and his band of Muktijoddhas.

Four young men were beaten and tortured for about thirty minutes before being bayoneted slowly to death in front of a huge jeering crowd of Bengalis at Bangladesh’s first public rally since the surrender of the Pakistan Army, reported the Daily Telegraph in its front page story on 20 December 1971. ‘None of the leaders of Mukti Fouj at Saturday’s rally in Dacca racecourse could explain specific charges against the four, all of whom were Bengalis who had been promised a “fair trial” (PERSONAL COMMENT: As fair as Hasina's Kangaroo Court). The accompanying photo is caption, “Laughing guerrillas watching a prisoner being beaten and tortured before he was bayoneted to death in Dacca at the weekend’.

‘Mukti Bahini bayoneted prisoners after prayers’, reported The Times on the same day. Photographs and comments on the incident are included in Oriana Fallaci’s feature on Sheikh Mujib in L’Europeo on 24 February 1972. Some of the photos taken by the foreign media show the Mukti Bahini soldiers burning the eyes of their prisoners with cigarettes before bayonetting them. A large crowd watches killings, some of them grinning. Children are among the onlookers, and a young boy is one of the victims. The Indian army is reported to have ‘arrested’ Siddiqi after this incident.

I’m not a fan of Keder Siddiqee. He resigned from Awami league and form a new party. I think he is trying to gain some anti-Awami vote but people aren’t buying it. He is just another awami with different label.



He recently said: “Jamat i Islamic party was against the separation of East Pakistan because they foresee annihilation of EP by India. He then goes on to say that he would not have fought for separation if he knew Jamat claimed would come true.”



I think guy is hypocrite. He doesn’t really believe what he said. Otherwise why would he regularly visit India?
