Pakistan to buy 77 F-16 jets from U.S.

Pakistan will buy 77 F-16 fighter jets from the United States by 2007, a newspaper reported Sunday, citing a top Pakistani diplomat. However, an air force official said the deal's details had yet to be completed.

The United States had earlier blocked the sale of the planes in line with sanctions against Pakistan over its nuclear program. But in March, Washington announced that it will sell the F-16s to the country, a close ally in the U.S. fight against terror.

In July, the Pakistani air force had confirmed that it would soon buy an initial two F-16s from the United States.

Jehangir Karamat, Pakistan's ambassador to Washington, said in an interview with Pakistani daily The News that Islamabad will get the two F-16 planes by December 20 next year, and a total of 77 by 2007.

An air force spokesman, however, said that Pakistan and the United States have yet to finalize how many aircraft Pakistan should get and when.

"Our negotiations are on and nothing has been finalized yet, including the number of aircraft and the time of delivery," said spokesman Air Comm. Sarfaraz Ahmed Khan.

Pakistan already has 32 of the fighters, and in the 1980s Washington scrapped a deal for more such aircraft because of Pakistan's nuclear program. Pakistan's chief rival, India, also has nuclear weapons, and the two countries have fought three wars since their independence from British rule in 1947.

To be honest, I don't really believe anything that comes out unless it comes directly from the PAF officer in charge. Its all BS to me except for the part:
"Our negotiations are on and nothing has been finalized yet, including the number of aircraft and the time of delivery," said spokesman Air Comm. Sarfaraz Ahmed Khan.
So the article in a sence contradicts itself, I think we should wait till the end of the month and see the official details.
