Pakistan says it tipped off US on bin Laden: report

WASHINGTON: Pakistan’s intelligence service believes it deserves credit for helping US spy agencies locate the hideout of Osama bin Laden, who was killed by US commandos nearly a year ago, The Washington Post reported.

“The lead and the information actually came from us,” an unnamed senior official with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate (ISI) told The Post.

The al Qaeda founder and 9/11 mastermind was killed on May 2 last year in a secret US Navy SEAL operation in a walled-off compound in the Pakistani garrison town of Abbottabad, north of the Pakistani capital.

Washington and Islamabad are now working to repair their relationship, which was badly damaged by the revelation that the world’s most wanted man was living a stone’s throw from Pakistan’s elite military academy.

“Any hit on al Qaeda anywhere in the world has happened with our help,” The Post quotes one of the Pakistani intelligence officials as saying.

The other official, who said he had been intimately involved in the hunt for senior al Qaeda operatives, including bin Laden, said the ISI provided the CIA with a cellphone number that eventually led to an al Qaeda courier using the nom de guerre of Abu Ahmed al-Kuwaiti, the paper said.

The officials said that in November 2010, they turned over the number to the CIA, along with information that it had last been detected in Abbottabad, the report said.

The ISI said it did not know then that the number was Kuwaiti’s, but that CIA analysts did, without however relaying that information back to the Pakistanis, The Post noted.

“They knew who the number belonged to,” the paper quoted one official as saying. “But after that their cooperation with us ended.” It is the story of an extreme trust deficit and betrayal,” complained the other ISI official, the paper pointed out.

However a US official disputed the ISI version, The Post said.

“The fact is, our knowledge of the number didn’t come from them telling us about it,” the paper quoted the US official as saying.

if you guys were responsible for giving them the info , why prosecute the doc who gave the US DNA evidence, and why make such a hullabaloo over the seal team violating your sovereignty ?

This has been discussed to death.

The Doc ran a fake vaccination campaign for monetary gain. You think the CIA told him that they were hiring him to find Osama? You'd have no problem with Indian citizens working for the ISI? Are you that obtuse?

The SEAL team conducted the operation without informing the Pakistani Govt. They didn't share any intelligence whatsoever nor did they tell the ISI that they were conducting an intelligence op in Abottabad a year before the May 2nd operation. Hell they were only 60% sure that Osama was living in Abottabad (look it up), yet they went forward with the raid.

This is when I realised that this thread has been posted in the wrong forum.

It ought to have been in either " Stupid and funny from all over the world' or the Humour section !!

Why?

It has been pretty evident from the start that it was the ISI who gave the CIA Osama's Courier's number which led to them tracing the whereabouts of Osama's hideout.

It was only AFTER the May 2nd raid that the US told Pakistan that the intel about the courier's number led to Osama's location.

Everybody started to comment without knowing this story in depth..............See who is posting this story....Washington Post...Right under the nose of CIA.......and which official of ISI said that no clue.............they did'nt mentioned his name.............and who knows that this story realy comes from ISI or another blame game to put ISI in another trap.:smokin:

.
It is well known that the lead to the courier was provided by ISI. Then Obl was found out by US.

Some times it helps to read the full article and understand the psyche of the subject.

The officials said that in November 2010, they turned over the number to the CIA, along with information that it had last been detected in Abbottabad, the report said.

Evidently, after this lead in provided by the ISI, the CIA followed on in a unilateral manner concluding with the gung ho raid on OBL compound.

.
Absolutely does not make sense, if you knew what info you were providing, why did you not acted on it? Why did you allowed US to act and finally why was such a surprise on raid.

If Pakistan knew it, then either they would have conducted the operation themselves and taken credit or they did not want to raid him at all.

It appears that they did not knew what information they were passing and now claiming credit for it.

You provided the info without knowing what it was, so no credit.

The ISI didn't know who it was because the CIA themselves got the info about the courier from the detainees in Guantanamo Bay, which, as hinted by the quoted ISI official, they conveniently didn't relay to the ISI.

After the whole Raymond Davis debacle, the US just wanted to disgrace Pakistan.

You provided the info without knowing what it was, so no credit.

Yea we were looking for the lucky lottery numbers and stumbled across the dubious phone number. :cheesy:

You may be suffering from the Bharti brainstorm syndrome, since who gives two monkeys about Indian acknowledgement. :D

Easy way to getting out, when you know you cannot win the argument.

I agree, you might have passed the phone number.

What I am saying, you had no idea where it will lead.

If you had the idea, you would have got him yourself, because if you did that you will not be in situation you are today.

Also US did not informed you about the raid speaks volumes about the confidence they had in Pakistan.

.
This is pathetic if Pakistan had information then Pakistan should have raided that house and captured him.

.
Case 1: I passed 100 phone numbers and one of them lead to OBL.
Did you gave the info? Yes.
Did you knew what it was? No. Because if you knew then you had more means to reach out to OBL, Why you did not?

Case 2: You passed the number knowing it had connection with OBL.

In that case why did you did not investigated and found him?
Did your companies did not knew how to locate a phone? If US can dig out info from your soil with limited means, then why you cannot do it yourself?

Mr Reheman Malik said we knew about that house, well if you knew any reason you did not raided?

This does not make any sense, I knew OBL is living their, but I calling Uncle Sam and asking him to get ride of him. Are you so incompetent that you cannot raid a house?

.
Errr.....

The ISI said it did not know then that the number was Kuwaiti’s, but that CIA analysts did, without however relaying that information back to the Pakistanis, The Post noted.
Doesn't that mean that they passed on the information as part of routine work without knowing the true value of that information?

Isn't it adorable how the OP just conveniently forgot to highlight the most important part. Or the part where US official rejects their tall claim.

.
why is it ISI trying to claim the credit now? why not a year ago soon after the incident?
