Pakistan came on top of India in the final of IBSF World Snooker Championship Team Event in Doha, Qatar on Friday, defeating the arch-rivals 3-1 only three days after beating them in the Asian championship.

Defending champions India’s team, comprising experienced Pankaj Advani and Laxman Rawat, lost to Pakistan’s Asjad Iqbal and Mohammad Bilal in a closely fought out contest.

Pakistan won the first two frames and looked on course for a whitewash in the final before India made a comeback to win the third frame to stay in the contest. However, Pakistan won the fourth frame to deny India back-to-back crowns, PTI reported.

Pakistan beat India to win Asian Team Snooker Championship

The Pakistani team had defeated Qatar’s Mohsen Abdulaziz Bukshaisha and Ahmed Saif 3-1 while India staged a comeback from the brink of defeat to beat Ireland’s Brendan O’Donoghue and Aaron Hill 3-2 in the semifinals of the mega event.

On June 29, the same Indian team was beaten by Pakistan’s Babar Masih and Zulfiqar Qadir 3-2 in the ACBS Asian Team Snooker Championship.

Outstanding work lads! Keep it up. Even if there is an opportunity for regional dominance - let alone global tournament winners for now - in snooker, it should be heavily promoted and supported at a national level.

We need to learn how to sustain sporting success in those sports where we chance upon a generation of raw talents. We cannot simply allow these sportsmen and women to sustain the cause all by themselves.

The greatest tragedies in Pakistani sporting history are our abject surrender in hockey and squash due to lack of government and national interest, despite being world beaters in both. This came about because we all expected those athletes to magically keep winning without proper support structures as seen in other nations, not to mention the heavy political involvement and factionalisation of our sports committees.

I really hope there is a revival in squash, and more support for hockey. I remember going to a hockey game when I was young, the crowd support for Pakistan team was amazing.

Congratulations :pakistan:.

Asian snooker title was taken by defeating India. Fine. But how is it World snooker title also?
