After the successful completion of HBL PSL 6, the Pakistan Cricket Board and HBL Pakistan Super League franchisees agreed on Friday that the seventh edition of the HBL PSL will be held in January and February next year.

The decision to prepone the event has been taken due to Australia’s tour of Pakistan in February and March 2022.

“We will have to sit down with the franchises and discuss this [PSL 7]. Australian team is visiting after 22 years. If we miss this window, they won’t return for another three or four years as their Future Tours Programme is already decided,” said PCB CEO Wasim Khan in an exclusive interview with Cricket Pakistan, back in June.

“In January the weather in Karachi is decent and in early February we can shift the tournament to Punjab but we still need to do planning in this regard,” he added.

The event will clash with the 2021-22 edition of the Big Bash League, scheduled from December 5 till January 28, which could mean that many top T20 players will miss the first few matches of the HBL PSL 7.

Holding the event after the Australia tour would have resulted in a clash with the Indian Premier League, which takes places in April and May, and consequently affect player availability.

During a teleconference in which the PCB was represented by Chief Executive Wasim Khan, Chief Operating Officer Salman Naseer, GM Commercial Imran Ahmed Khan and PSL Senior General Manager Operations Usman Wahla – the two parties also discussed a way forward in regards to the new commercial rights cycle and established a framework for rights evaluation and their subsequent sale.

The franchisees representatives who attended the meeting included Salman Iqbal and Tariq Wasi (both Karachi Kings), Sameen Rana (Lahore Qalandars), Haider Azhar (Multan Sultans), Nadeem Omar (Quetta Gladiators), Nausherwan Effandi (Peshawar Zalmi) and Ali Naqvi (Islamabad United).

No more teams to be added to PSL for another two years: PCB

• Move aimed at ensuring franchises receive maximum share of revenue

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has said that no new team will be added to the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for at least two years.

The development comes a day after the franchises agreed to PCB’s new revenue-sharing model that offers an increased share, fixing the dollar value and fee relaxation as part of Covid relief.

PCB Director Media & Communications Sami Ul Hasan Burney confirmed to Business Recorder that the cricket board's plan to add a seventh team to the PSL pool has been put off for at least two years.

The PCB was to hold the auction process for the seventh team ahead of PSL 2023, however, staunch opposition from franchises held the cricket board back. Team owners maintained that they had already been suffering losses for six years, and the addition of another team would add to their miseries.

Now, PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja has accepted their demand to ensure that the teams receive the maximum amount of share from the revenue stream to compensate for their losses.

The arrangement is part of the new financial deal between the cricket board and the PSL franchises agreed to on Monday.

Some of the salient features of the deal are the fee relaxation for the fifth and sixth editions of PSL as part of Covid-19 relief, an increase in the share of all six franchises from the Central Pool of Revenue till PSL 20, and fixing of dollar rate to end uncertainty surrounding annual payments.

In a joint statement, the franchise owners welcomed the move and said they look forward to expanding the existing partnership with the cricket board and making the league even bigger and better.

“HBL PSL is very close to our hearts. Since 2016, we all have worked very hard to bring it to where it is today. The acceptance of the PCB offer is an indication of our commitment and resolve to make the HBL PSL a bigger and better league that is participated by the best players, commercially supported by the elite companies and watched live by the passionate cricket fans in Pakistan as well as globally,” the statement added.

Drafting for PSL 7 to take place on December 8

The drafting for Pakistan Super League’s (PSL) new season will take place on December 8 in National High-Performance Centre, Lahore.

According to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) sources, the decision was taken during a meeting chaired by PCB chairman Ramiz Raja. The participants also decided to start the tournament in the last week of January 2022.

Sources further revealed that the international players will arrive in Pakistan on January 15.
All the teams have been directed to report at Karachi’s private hotel on the same day.

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Super League (PSL) season seven may be hit with delays as authorities are facing problems in players’ registration, sources said Monday.

Sources privy to the matter said that the PSL’s management was facing difficulties in players’ registration as most of the players will be busy in a foreign league on the dates proposed for the PSL-7 draft. The league could be delayed for a few days.

Earlier, the players' draft for the seventh edition of the PSL was expected to take place in the second week of December. Now, the players’ drafting for the league would be possible on December 14 and 15, the sources added.

The process for players' trading and retention could not be started yet.

The seventh edition of the PSL was scheduled to kick off in the fourth week of January next year.

PSL 7 players' draft expected to take place in December

The players' draft for the seventh edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) was expected to take place in the second week of December, sources informed Geo News on November 15.

Per sources, preparations to create the list of players' retention and the draft was underway, while the draft was expected to take place between December 8-10.

In the last edition of the tournament, Multan Sultans triumphed over Peshawar Zalmi in the final to win their maiden PSL title in a see-saw kind of game at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi in July.


Rift emerges between PCB, franchise owners

A day earlier, a new tiff had emerged between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the franchise owners over the salary cap for players ahead of the seventh edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

The annoyance of PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja was clearly visible during a meeting with the PSL franchise owners during which they were called out for "meddling" with Pakistan cricket. With PSL 7 just a few months away, Raja and franchise owners had a heated argument.

Babar Azam to lead Karachi Kings in PSL 7

Babar Azam, the all-format captain of the Pakistan cricket team, will lead the Karachi Kings in the seventh edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) which is starting in January next year.

The franchise confirmed the long-rumoured development on its official Twitter account on Tuesday.

"Big announcement for Karachi Kings fans! Our national team skipper, the one and only Babar Azam, will now be the captain of Karachi Kings as well!"

“This is such an honour for me that the whole team management, including Imad Bhai, has entrusted me with the captaincy of our beloved Karachi Kings team. This means the world to me,” Babar said in a video message attached with the tweet.

"I have been playing for the Karachi Kings for the last five years, and this is like my home and family away from home.

"I will work as hard more to take the team to even greater heights than what we’ve already achieved so far. My promise is that I will give it my all to make sure we keep on growing toward bigger and better things,” Azam said.

The players' draft for the seventh edition of the PSL is due for the second week of December while the tournament is likely to start in late January. Karachi and Lahore are expected to host 17 matches each with the playoffs and the final at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

The first match of the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2022 will be held in Karachi on January 27 and Lahore will host the tournament's final on February 27, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced on Friday as it released the schedule for the seventh edition of its premier cricket league.

"Following an opening ceremony, defending champions Multan Sultans will take on hosts and 2020 champions Karachi Kings at the National Stadium with the first ball to be bowled at 7pm" on January 27, a PCB press release said, adding that 2019 champions Quetta Gladiators would go toe to toe with 2017 winners Peshawar Zalmi the following day.

"After Karachi, which will host 15 matches from January 27 to February 7, action will shift to the Gaddafi Stadium where the remaining 15 league matches and the four play-offs will be played from February 10-27," the PCB said.

It will be the first time since 2017 when the headquarters of Pakistan cricket will host the PSL final.
The National Stadium in Karachi had staged the league's finals from 2018 to 2020, while Abu Dhabi was the venue for the 2021 final, where Multan Sultans defeated Peshawar Zalmi by 47 runs.
Speaking on the matter, PCB Chairperson Ramiz Raja said: “I am delighted that the HBL PSL 7 schedule has been announced. This will now get the ball rolling with the teams to start planning and finalising their line-ups and the PCB increasing the pace of the operational delivery to ensure they provide quality playing facilities for the players as well as a five-star experience to the fans and our valued commercial partners."

“The HBL PSL 7 will also kickstart what will be a bumper year for Pakistan cricket with the Australia men’s cricket team to play a full series in March-April with England men’s cricket side to tour Pakistan twice for white-ball and red-ball cricket," Raja added.


Player draft

According to the press release, the PCB has decided to hold the player draft for the league at its National High Performance Centre in Lahore on December 12.

"Each side will come to the draft with a maximum of eight-player retentions from the last event," it further stated. "Following the finalisation of player categories, the transfer and retention window is now officially open and will close on December 10."

According to the press release, Lahore Qalandars will have the first pick in the Platinum category, Diamond category, Gold category and Emerging category, Peshawar Zalmi will have the first pick in the Silver category, and Quetta Gladiators will have the first pick in the Supplementary category.


Local players’ category renewals

The press release said the PCB, after a review and assessment process, had updated local players’ categories.
"In the biggest moves, Pakistan wicketkeeper/batter and Multan Sultan’s captain Mohammad Rizwan (previously Silver), Asif Ali of Islamabad United (previously Gold) and Lahore Qalandars’ Haris Rauf (previously Diamond) have been placed in Platinum Category."


Moreover, Multan Sultans’ Sohaib Maqsood, who was named the Player of HBL PSL's sixth edition, and Haider Ali of Peshawar Zalmi have moved up from Silver and Gold categories to Diamond category, respectively.

PSL 7: Afridi, Vince and Iftikhar join Quetta Gladiators, Azam moves to Islamabad

In a surprise move, Islamabad United have traded in-form batter, Iftikhar Ahmed, for wicketkeeper-batsman Azam Khan with Quetta Gladiators for the seventh edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

“We thank Iftikhar Ahmed for his wonderful time at #ISLU. Unfortunately, we are unable to retain him because of category distributions. We wish him the best of luck at Quetta Gladiators,” Islamabad United wrote on its official Twitter handle.

The franchise also welcomed Azam's inclusion in the squad.

This marks Quetta’s third trade ahead of the PSL 2022 draft. In its previous two moves, they had traded Shahid Afridi and James Vince from Multan Sultans. In turn, Multan will get a couple of extra picks in the Diamond and Silver categories in PSL 2022 draft.

Islamabad United are hopeful that the inclusion of Azam Khan will strengthen their batting as they were missing a hard-hitting wicketkeeper-batsman in their lineup after Luke Ronchi hanged his gloves. Although Rohail Nazir has been quite good behind the stumps, but he does not have the x-factor Azam Khan does.

Quetta Gladiators head coach, and Azam’s father, Moin Khan had earlier hinted that the franchise would be willing to let go of Azam if any other franchise offers him a permanent wicket-keeping slot.

In return, Quetta acquired the services of Iftikhar Ahmed who will bring much-needed experience and stability to their fragile middle-order.

Quetta will be hoping that these three players can turn around their fortunes and help them qualify for the playoffs for the first time in three seasons.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is working to provide fans a good experience during the Pakistan Super League (PSL), with the tournament's seventh edition set to begin next month.

PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja, in a video statement, said there is a need to improve the fans' experience and announced that the board is trying to install free internet services at the stadium for the attendees during the tournament.

"We will establish stations outside the grounds [...] we will also a find a commentator among you. Me and another commentator will see whether you have the capability to become a commentator," he said.

PSL 7 draft: Jason Roy rejoins Gladiators, Qalandars pick Fakhar as franchises finalise squads

The six HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises on Sunday finalised their squads in their quest to lift the glittering trophy of the seventh edition of the tournament beginning next month.

Defending champions Multan Sultans picked Australia’s Tim David, who was previously with Lahore Qalandars, in the platinum category, while their other notable selections were the West Indian duo of Odean Smith and Rovman Powell, and Pakistanis Anwar Ali, Imran Khan Sr and Rumman Raees.

These players will join Imran Tahir, Mohammad Rizwan, Khushdil Shah, Rilee Rossouw, Shan Masood, Shahnawaz Dahani and Sohaib Maqsood who were retained earlier in the week for PSL 2022, according to a statement issued by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after the draft held at the High Performance Centre in Lahore.

The upcoming season will see England all-rounder Chris Jordan return to Karachi Kings in the platinum category after missing the 2021 tournament. The side also opted for England’s Lewis Gregory and Tom Abell, as well as Pakistan U-19 captain Qasim Akram.

They will join Babar Azam, Aamir Yamin, Imad Wasim, Joe Clarke, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Ilyas, Mohammad Nabi and Sharjeel Khan who were retained by the Kings on Friday.

Lahore Qalandars included Pakistan’s flamboyant batter Fakhar Zaman in the platinum category for the sixth consecutive year, while also picking Abdullah Shafique and Kamran Ghulam (both Pakistan) and England’s Harry Brook and Phil Salt. All six franchises of Pakistan Super League (PSL) finalised their squads on Sunday as the day-long PSL draft ceremony concluded in Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) High-Performance Centre in Lahore, Aaj News reported.

In their first pick in the Platinum category, Multan Sultans selected Australia’s Tim David, who was previously with Lahore Qalandars. Their other notable picks included the West Indian duo of Odean Smith and Rovman Powell, and the Pakistan trio of Anwar Ali, Imran Khan Snr and Rumman Raees.

England all-rounder Chris Jordan has returned to Karachi Kings in the Platinum Category after missing the 2021 campaign. The side also opted for England’s Lewis Gregory and Tom Abell, as well as Pakistan U19 captain Qasim Akram.

Lahore Qalandars included Pakistan’s flamboyant batter, Fakhar Zaman, for the sixth successive year in Platinum Category, while also picking Abdullah Shafique, Kamran Ghulam (both Pakistan) and England’s pair of Harry Brook, Phil Salt.

Islamabad United have kept faith in Colin Munro of New Zealand in the Platinum Category and also picked Danish Aziz, Marchant de Lange, Reece Topley and Zafar Gohar. They will join Asif Ali, Alex Hales, Azam Khan, Hasan Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Paul Stirling and Shadab Khan.

Explosive Afghanistan opener Hazratullah Zarzai and swashbuckling England opener Jason Roy were picked up by Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators, respectively. The 2017 champions also picked fast bowler Arshad Iqbal, wicketkeeper/batter Kamran Akmal and wrist-spinner Usman Qadir.

2019 winners Quetta Gladiators also scooped Afghanistan fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq, Quetta-born Pakistan U19 batter Abdul Wahid Bangalzai and seasoned white-ball players Sohail Tanvir and Umar Akmal.
