Pakistan Sri Lanka annual trade can exceed US$1 billion

Collective efforts can help increase the annual trade volume between Pakistan and Sri Lanka to more than a billion dollars, Pakistan High Commissioner Seema Ilahi Baloch said at a press briefing.

She expressed satisfaction on the increase in the volume of the bilateral trade since the signing of the Pakistan-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement (PSFTA), which came into effect in June 13, 2005.

She said institutional infrastructure in shape of FTA on goods, Bilateral Investment Treaty, MoU on Customs Cooperation is in place and the framework can be strengthened by negotiating and concluding the Services & Investment chapters of the FTA.

Speaking at the media briefing along with the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) Chairman Janaka Ratnayake, Baloch invited Sri Lankan investors to visit Pakistan and explore its potential.

Pakistan offers geo- strategic location, trained workforce, abundant raw materials, infrastructure, and investor-friendly policies to the investors, she said. “Pakistan is especially looking forward to investments in the energy sector,” Baloch said. Pakistani agricultural produce provide cheaper and higher quality alternative to Sri Lankan imports from countries such as Australia & South America.

Ratnayake said that Pakistan and Sri Lanka enjoy a strong and long standing relationship and economic cooperation. EDB is willing to join hands with Pakistan High Commission in Sri Lanka to expand volume of trade between the two countries, he said.

“We believe that it is our responsibility to work with friendly neighbour to develop trade and provide opportunities for business communities of both the countries to forge new trade ties,” he said.

He said EDB is ready to carry out series of promotional activities in Pakistan & Sri Lanka in collaboration with Pakistan High Commission for 2012.

This will include conducting seminars to create awareness, mini exhibition for women entrepreneurs from the countries, single country exhibition, and trade fair participation. EDB organized Sri Lanka’s participation at My Karachi International Exhibition consecutively in 2007, 2008, 2009 & 2010, which paved way for Sri Lankan exporters to expand in Pakistan market.

EDB has taken efforts to promote value added products like packed tea, confectionery, herbal healthcare, wood based modular furniture, rubber products, gems, jewellery, porcelain tableware, paint, varnishes, pre-fabricated steel, electrical wiring accessories, and LV panel boards.
